William St. 5tf STUDENTS ISSUE TOO UNLESS INTRBER IS DECREASED FOlER CIIA4GE SYSTEM IfAY BE USEDI Unless students earnestly co-oper- ate with bank officials in making their withdrawals of larger amounts and in restricting the number of checks, the banks on the campus will find it necessary to revert to the old system of charging 25 cents for every time an account falls below $50 in order to help defray the expense resulting from the handling of student deposits. At present an average student ac- count does not contain more than five or ten dollars at the end of each month, and often the account drops far below this, leaving a small sum for the banker to utilize. Students are also accustomed to write checks of small denominations. By doing this they are not only rapidly consuming the bank's printed matter, but are also effecting unnecessary labor for the bank employes. In an interview with Carl F. Braun, assitant cashier of the Ann Arbor Sav- ings bank, he said, "We need the co- operation of the students. If they would write larger checks and pay their small bills in cash, the matter could be easily remedied. Right now we are handling the students' money at a loss, because we must employ extra bookkeepers to take charge of the small withdrawals of the st. dents." J. G. Schindehette, cashier of the branch office of the Farmers and Me- chanics bank, expressed his oplinion as follows: "A great loss is incurred by banks carrying student deposits. The withdrawals are numerous and small, resulting in a great deal of ex- tra work. If the students would is- sue larger checks and would not waste their check books everythiug w ould be all right. As it is some stu- dents even use their check pads 'or note paper. If the students refuse to co-operate with us we will have to re- vert to the plan of charging extra every time an account falls below $50." Girls . attention! Trojanow- MICHIGAN LEGISLA9TURE ACTS ON WEIGHTY BILLS, COMMISSIONER MAY REPLACE JUNKET SYSTEM NOW IN YOGUE Lansing, Mich., Jan. 13.-One week of legislative labor has passed and 36 bills and four joint resolutions have been introduced in the house and 16 bills and four joint resolutions in the senate. Of this grist a large number are on routine matters or of minor importance or purely local in their effects, though purely local bills are not permitted under the present con- stitution. A half dozen stand out as of state-- wide general interest. Foremost of these is the budget bill introduced in the senate, providing for a budget com- missioner at a $5,000 salary to form, with the governor aid auditor general, a budget board which shallpass on all financial needs of institutions. The measure would put an end to junkets, make comparison of purchase prices and operating expenses of the several institutions possible and work for economy. May 1ave Senate Offices. Still another measure calculated to better the handling of state affairs is that for the erection of a senate of- fice building, at a cost of $800,000. Equivalent to tle interest on this sum is now being paid in rental by the state of offices outside the capitol. A bill providing for a public service commission to take the place of the state railroad commission, with mem- bers paid $7,000 a year and a counsel at a salary of $5,000, is another im- portant bill of the week. It would be given all the powers, and more than the railroad commission. Representative Wood's bill intro- duced Thursday to punish unauthor- ized taking of an automobile, under the penalty of three months to two years imprisonment, without being necessary to show intent to steal, is the bill of the week which probably will strike the most popular chord.
