In every way except the attendance the meeting was a big success. The prevailing opinion last night was that the total number out for the gathering should not be allowed to represent the aggregate of the men out for work this season. About 60 enthusiastic athletes were present, nearly all of whom are trying for positions on the Varsity. "Work" was the keynote which all the speakers sounded at some portion of their discourse. The "bring out more concentrate better on the work be- fore a person. Captain Carroll especially encourag- ed men with mediocre ability to make preparations to try for a place. "A man with only mediocre ability is often developed into a star perform- er with hard work. It is not the star we are after any more than it is mater- ial which may be developed into a re- cognized point getter," Carroll went on. Coach Farrell dealt particularly with the opponents Michigan will probably meet this season. Steve said the Var- sity will have two excellent dual meets in the gym, the first of which will oc- cur just after the second semester starts. In addition the coach will take a squad east to one of the big inter- collegiate indoor meets in February. Comparing Mich- igan's usual half hundred tryouts, some of the other schools have as many as 200 to 300 men out at the be- ginning of their seasons. Professor Aigler of the Law school told the athletes that track as well as other forms of athletics should go hand in hand with scholastic work. Aigler pointed out that bodily develop- ment also helps in the development of greater ;mental faculties by aiding in .keeping the brain clear and able to.
