France has suffered in about the same proportion as has Italy, but the merchant marine of other nations has been less affected. The percent- age of total loss accredited to Ger- many and her allies is only one-thou- sandth of one per cent. Effect on Business. General business has, unlike the stock market, not yet had time to be affected by the new movement for peace. and may not be affected at all, -should the attempt prove abruptly un- successful. but should negotiations fol- low, even if long drawn out with fight- ing continuing, there will be added caution manifested in purchases, al- though throughout these have been conducted generally with much con- servatism. The decline in raw cot- ton has had its effect on prices of cot- ton fabrics, and tended to check any further advances which had been under consideration. In, the last month or two thee has been a gen- eral movement toward higher and higher prices in nearly all lines. This has subsided somewhat. Motor stocks for a month 'or more have been uniformly weak and have declined out of proportion to other in- dustrials. The Market. The stock market has had one of the most thorough and beneficial liquidations which it has experienced for a considerable period, and it will be a long time probably before it gets again in danger from over-speculation. Good stocks are now selling at attrac- tive levels, and the sound situation in the market makes advances extremely likely. 266 STUDENTS GIVEN TEACHING POSITIONS IN PAST YEAR Statistics compiled by the appoint- committee of the University for the year 1915-1916 show that during the past year 266 students have been placed in teaching positions.
