MUSLL SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT 00 F LIFE Convicted for Murder of Wife; Said to have Lived in Mantelona, Michigan Grand Rapids, Oct. 4.-John Wil- liams, alias "James Alerton," alias "Scott Mausall" who confessed to hav- ing murdered his wife. Mrs. M. St. John of Mayfield, N. "Y., was sentenced to life imprisonment this afternoon. Through letters found in the prison- er's room police believe they have definitely established the man's ident- ity as Scott Mausall. His home is said to have been in Mancelona, Mich. A dispatch from that village this after- noon declared that Mausall's son was found murdered in the woods 11 years ago. Supicion fell on the father but he went free. Two sisters who lived in the east died mysteriously about two years ago while he was visiting them, the authorities were informed. DR. MERRILL TO DO RESEARCH WORK FOR U. S. GOVERNMENT Dr. P. W. Merrill, formerly an in- structor in astronomy and a member of the observatory staff, left the Uni- versity at the beginning of the school year to take up a position offered him at the National Bureau of Standards at Washington, where he will devote his energies principally to astronomi- cal research for the government. Dr. Kiess, a graduate of the Univer- sity of California, will fill the vacancy in the department of astronomy.
