Kraus, dean of the sum- mer session yesterday, "but regardless of the indecision pending with many, all indications are that the number will almost come up to that of last year." With additional courses added to meet the war crisis, more than 300 courses of instruction will be offered. JOURNALISM AND THE WAR The best service that a student trained for newspaper work san rend- er to his country-assuming that he is not drafted-is to find a place in a newspaper office and pursue his call- ing with all his might. If he does this, though it be in a humble capacity, he will be quite as useful as the high- est-salaried war correspondent at the front, and perhans even more so. The safety of the Republic during the war will depend in large measure upon the presence in newspaper offices of sane, thoughtful, high-minded men such as a university ought to produce. There are two dangers to which a democracy is peculiarly exposed in a Slowly, but surely, the new Mich- iVan Union building is seen rising out of the depths of the earth. As a result of six weeks work the first floor has been completed and in 20 weeks time they will have com- pleted the structure up to the tower. At this time we will have only a bare construction shell of the building. The war will somewhat hinder the progress of the building as many men who have subscribed to the building fund have enlisted in the army or navy, thus making it impossible for them to pay the subscribed amount. erco fegfate Harvard: in addition to the regu- I ar Liberty bond committees, a sub- .ommittee has been appointed to can- vass Harvard in the interests of the niew bond plan. To repel the enemy, we have, or shall have in course of time, an army and a navy; but to meet the second and per- haps more serious danger we must d:- pend in large measure upon the news- paper press. It was as the great furtherer of democracy that the news- paper seems to have been brought in- to existence, and as yet no other agency has been found to take its place. Only the press in a country as large as this has the power to keep democ- racy alive, for it alone can reflect quickly, adequately, and continuous- ly the desires and olinions of the peo- ple. It alone can make the people realize at every moment of their lives that the government, whether in peace or in war is of by, and for them. To contribute in even a small de- gree to making the newspaper press a truthful reporter of the nation's sig- nificant activities and a truthful re- flector of the people's will, and so to strengthen the spirit of democracy, is a work into which any man with the proper gifts and training may in time like these, throw himself unreservedly He will find in it abundant opportun- ity for the exercise oi all his powers.
