The Red Cross or- ganization of Ann Arbor sent repre- sentatives to the stricken quarters as soon as word reached the organization. Food was taken along to give to the people whose homes were completely destroyed. Many of the unfortunate farmers were cared for by their neigh- bors. A relief fund will be raised by the Red Cross in order to aid the peo- ple until they are able to provide for themselves. At Delhi the roof of the church was blown off and carried across the road. The home of Emil Nevereth lay in the wake of the tornado and consequently was ruinated. Mrs. Nevereth was car- ried 200 feet. She was seriously in- jured. Small pigs that were wallow- ing in the mud before the approach of the gale were picked up and buried alive in the mud. A few were resuscit- ated after much effort. The family of John R. Welch, a few miles from Delhi, ran down into the basement when the tornado appeared. The house was leveled to the ground, leaving the family safe. The barn was completely razed, though a Ford auto- mobile which had been stored in it remained uninjured. Theroofofnthe house of Mrs. Sears, a widow, was blown across the road. Catro's Farm Ruined Angel Castro, the Mexican who Prof.. John R. Allen brought back with him from his trip in Mexico, and who worked for him as houseboy until the Allens went to Turkey, found his farm this afternoon a total ruin, not a sin- gle structure standing. Mr. Castro had been employed as caretaker at Water- man gymnasium until a few years ago.- He had saved his earnings to purchase this farm. The damage caused to all telephone1 and telegraph companies is estimated to be over $10,000. All Detroit, Kala- mazoo, and Jackson lines between Ann , Arbor and Dexter are out of working.1 The 37 poles which were destroyed, will have to be replaced by new poles, the tornado breaking the poles in a manner which makes them useless for further service. With the French Armies in the Field, June 6.--Ever since Field Mar- shal von Hindenberg visited at the Aisne and Champaign fronts early in May, the Germans have given no in- dication of any other plan except to defend themselves, while they are feverishly constructing at the rear a successive series of retreating lines similar to the boasted "Hindenberg line." Geriany has only 21 divisions of troops on the western front, approxi- mately 315,000 men, which she has not vet flung into the fighting line. The :107 divisions (1,605,000 men) with which the British and French of- fensives have been engaged in recent weeks have suffered losses averaging between two and three thousand per division, or from 214,000 to 321,000 men. These figures are those of French headquarters. They give not only a clear idea of the efforts Ger- many is making to stop attacks, but also the terrific toll which the allies haven taken during the fighting. French estimates are that Germany has a total of 156 divisions of troops 6n the western front. This would be about 2,340,000 men. Of these 156, only 128 are real fighting divisions, the others being auxiliary forces. One hundred and seven of these 128 fight- ing corps have been identified as op- posed to the French and British forces, at some time during the offensive.- British Field Guns Are Effective London, June 6.-An artillery duel was thundering all the way from VimyI to north of Ypres today, while the hot sun blistered down on the waiting forces in the trenches. In the clear sky air fighting was incessant. British hammering from field guns was effective on the enemy. Prisoners captured in innumerable small raids occuring every night de- clare that the stream of steel is play- ing havoc with the German front'and support trenches, and rendering elab- oratesentanglements useless as ob- stacles. The Germans' nerves have been so badly shattered at some places that fresh divisions have just arrived from the Russian front to replace them. 1223 SENIORS WILL BE GIVEN SHEEPSINS AT COMMENCEMENT I- NOTICE To Owners of Panama Hats TO .everyone who has Panama h~at., to be bleached and reblocked, and to our customers who patronized us when we were on Iluron Street, who may not know, we wish to say that our Factory and Salesroom is now located n Pack- ard Street, onlx tw-o doors from the corner of Packard and State.
