BRITISH AND GERMANS
RESUME MASS FIGHTING
REPORT EXTENSION OF FRENCH
DRIVE AROUND VER-
DUN
Paris, May 30.- A resumption of
fairly active mass fighting over many
sectors of the British front, with a
repulse of German assaults in Cham-
paign, and continued extension of the
French drive around Verdun, was re-
ported in the war office statement to-
day. South of St. Quentin a voilent
artillery struggle was in progress with
a great deal of patrol fighting .
In Champaign, a German attack led
by special assaults was unsuccessful
in enabling them to reach the French
trenches. Many of the enemy were
killed and a large number imprisoned
in a repulse of this attack.
Around Verdun and hill No. 304, the
statement said, the French "cleaned
up their trenches," consolidating their
position. Two German aeroplanes
were brought down yesterday.
Reconnoitering Parties Repulsed
Berlin, via London, May 30.-British
and French reconnoitering parties in
the Artois sector and along the Shem-
esimes were both repulsed, today's of-
ficial statement asserted.
Around Wyschaete there was lively
artillering, but the fire was confined
to this sector throughout the day.
In the evening the artillery fire spread
to other sectors, southwest of St.
Quentin. The German forces took a
number of French prisoners.
British Raid German Trenches
London, May 30.-British raids pen-
etrated into German trenches south of
Neuve Chatelle, and inflicted casual-
ties, according to Field Marshal Haig's
report today. In the neighborhood of
Croisilles and west of Lens hostile
raiders were repulsed. No major fight-
ing actions were reported.
Bank Subscribes $7M,00,000
New York, May 30.-A $75,000,000
subscription to the Liberty loan by
an unnamed bank was announced by
President Frank Vanderlip of the Na-
tional City bank here today. He, at1
the batme time, expressed the hope that
his own bank contribution will exceed
that.

ur Ideals Like Italy's Says Tribuna
Rome, May 30.-"There is perfect
lentity in Italian and American
leals," says the Tribuna, commenting
a the message of King Victor to
resident Wilson and the latter's an-
wer. "Their ideals agree with the
beral origins of the two nations."
he king's message can be taken as
te basis whereon during the war and
fter Italo-American relations of
eciprocal understanding may be solid-
built.
The Idea Nazionale interprets the
ing's message as meaning that Italy
eeds Trent, Triest, Istria, Dalmatia
ad Epirus to complete her national
aity and also to insure the safety of
