It doubted wheth- er it were nobler to remain in oblivion within the protective box, or to ven- ture out and brave the furies of Sol and Pluvius. The only grassy headdresses to be seen were those which were so tempt- ingly exhibited in harberdashers' win- dows. Perhaps the campus be'aux re- served their purchases for Sunday parade or maybe the all-important check failed to arrive in time. .SOUTH AMERICAN STUDENTS GIVE FAREWELL BANQUET Meni from Republics of the South Cele- brate Argentine In- dependence University students from Colombia' Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentine, banqueted Friday night in commemoration of the anniversary of Argentine independence. Main St.-Adv. t MICHIGAN MEN TO WORK IN EASTERN SHIPYARDS PROFESSOR PHILLIPS RECEIVES PARTICULARS FROITM OFFIC- IAL IN CHARGE Further information about work for University of Michigan men in Maine shipyards has been received by Prof. Ulrich B. Phillips, of the history de- partment. Professor Phillips has been register- ing men for summer work on govern- ment contract and has kept in touch with Prof. F. L. Thompson of Amherst college, who has general charge of the registration. Professor Thompson states that contracts for the ships now have been sent to New England. The agent handling the contracts says there is no doubt that the labor of college men will be wanted. The wages will be on a basis of about $2.50 per day where the prevalent cost of board and lodging is about $6.00 per week, and perhaps higher where the cost of living is greater. As soon as the contracts are actu- ally signed, Professor Thompson will prom tly report on the wants , and conditions of the yards in Maine. He writes: "Tell your boys to hold on. I believe this is going to be a great work for real men." Professor Phillips has already regis- tered about 50 men here for this ser- vice, along with several others who have written him from Grand Rapids and New York. Registration will be continued by Professor Phillips, who may be found in room 203 Tappan hall at 12 and at 3 o'clock on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, or at his home, 1954 Cam- bridge road. McCOMB Phone 1027-J I - Those were the good old days, when the faculty saw to it that the big strong men should not waste all their energy in fussing "co-eds." In 1891 an effort was made at Weslyan university to regulate the number of calls a man might make a week. In order that each man might not call more than once a week, and that one man might not monopolize one girl's time the following plan was pro- posed: To each man was to be given a slip to be filled out in such a way as to give the signature of the caller, his residence, the evening on which the call was made. and the name of the lady. Moreover, the man had to bear in mind that the young lady could not entertain after 10 o'clock. Worse than this, the card was not transferable. In the same year the president of Des Moines college' announced that students falling in love with each other during the school year were con- sidered violators of a college rule and were liable to severe discipline. Despite this overwhelming evidence there are still people who say the millenium lies before us.
