New York, May 21.-America's first
offensive' of the war-the $2,000,000,-
000 liberty loan drive-is in full swing
today. Reports from all parts of the
country show the nation's energies are
concentrated to make the issue a win-
ner.
Capital and labor are allied, bankers
and toilers have joined hands and
every art of advertising, as well as
sermons, speeches, and parades are be-
ing used to make America realize the
loan must succeed.
40 Bond Salesmen at Work
A volunteer army of 500 bond sales-
men started a canvass today of the
financial district for subscriptions. Up
town, the big retail stores started work
to sell a $50 bond to every man, wom-
an, and child in New York. Some of
the larger stores have arranged to
furnish bonds to their salesmen to be
paid for on the installment plan.
Detroit Raises $100,000
In St. Louis the "bond in every
home" slogan originated. The total
subscriptions in the Cleveland federal
reserve district are estimated at $100,-
000,000. The city of Detroit subscribed
$100,000 as an example to other mu-
nicipalities. Twenty-five million dol-
lars has been pledged in St. Louis.
