Certainly this is a man's main chance-to offer his breast to to the enemy of the world, the barbarous foe of his country and home. And how can a man fail fb give to his children this heritage. A man unable to take an active part is apt to feel throughout the rest of his days he has only half lived." Although born and reared in the north he claims the south as his adopted section and is glad that the southern boys are responding so earn- estly to the country's call. "My father was an officer in the Union army for four years," he states. "My children are half 'Johnny' and half 'Yank,' and the great kindness of the people of my adopted section has brought me to be, and want to be, considered one of them. But being northern by birth and training, and southern by selection, you can im- agine the pleasure I have had in see- ing all these boys so dear to me rush into the column with the stars and stripes floating up there at the head. They have not taken time to dwell on the glorious heritage of the southern boy and have in no manner relin- quished one iota of it, but have shown their worthiness of this heritage, and are fixing to pass some of the same 'thing on to the next generation."
