I SAUNDERIS HOOKS UP IN FINE hURLING DUEL WITh TE AT-)LTE Another Contest Due This Afternioon Between First Team and Reserves Lundgren's Varsity again took the measure of the scrubs, 2 to 0, in a close five inning game yesterday aft- ernoon, at Ferry field. The game was a pitcher's battle throughout, with Saunders doing the hurling for the scrubs and Ruzicka working in the box for the Varsity. Saunders breezed along in fine style and had it not been for a wild throw by Darbaker and a couple of scrub misplays, he would have held, the reg- ulars scoreless. Ruzicka took things easily except in the pinches and he held the aspirants well in hand at' all stages. The scrubs filled the bases with one out on one occasion but Ruzy fanned one man and forced the other to hit an .easy fly to right. The scrubs got a manz around to third on one other occa- sion but failed to get him across the plate. Fielding Falls Off The fielding was wretched for the most part yesterday but the batters unlimbered to quite an extent and were slamming the ball around the lot in great style. Clever handling of hard chanceshelped both pitchers yet both suffered frome poor, work on the easier smashes. Before the game Lundgren worked International to iis band for Year Owners Vote 6 to 2 to Abolish League for Present Time New York, March 29.-The Interna- tional baseballl ,eague club owners, meeting here today, voted to disband the league for the time being. Acting President Chapin ainounced the vote to be 6 to 2 in favor of'dis- banding. He would not state which clubs wished to continue, but said that he voted for the majority in be- half of his own club of Rochester, and also by proxy for the Buffalo man- agement. The question was thrashed out for a long time previous to the final vote. Mr. Chapin has been appointed to wind up the affairs of the league. There was a total absence of snap in the play of the Varsity and rt until the fag end: of the workout 4;a1 the men pep up to any considerablk extent. The coach declared that tnere would have to be: more fight displayed or else the Wol- verines would prove no match for the Conference teams. Garrett Plays Second on Varsity Lundgren brought Garrett back up from the scrubs yesterday and sent Cooper back to left field. Garrett has been going great guns on defense at short and he kept up the pace in yes- terday's game. He was not hitting the first part of the week but he found his eye during the battle and smashed out one hit and connected solidly with several others. If Garrett can keep up his hitting and fielding at the same tin4, Lund- gren-will not have to worry for a sec- ond baseman. The keystone sack has presented the biggest problem of the season for the coach seemed unable to find a man who could field the place and still rap out the hits when they, were needed. Garrett, formerly an out- fielder, has always been a clever field- er but did not hit at all until yester- day. The Wolverine track squad is wait- ing for .the time when it will journey down to Ferry Field for their work- outs. None -of the men have been do- ing much in the line of hard work this week as Steve has been letting them off with short easy sessions on the track next to Waterman gymnasium. Captain Donnelly has been work- ing harder than any of the rest of the squad as Red is anxious to get back into condition. He has been handi- capped all season by illness and by a late start in his training. Donnelly expects to be alltright in time for the first outdoor meet. Sedgwick, another of Coach Far- rell's long distance runners, has been kept from practice for several days on account of a bad cold, but Sedg informed the coach yesterday that he would be 'around for a workout to- day. The jumping pits inside the wooden oval, which Steve has named Little Ferry Field, are completed and the field event men have been taking ad- vantage ,of them to get used to the outdoor turf. Johnson was working on the broad jump yesterday making several leaps of better than 21 feet. His record in prep school was better than this, however, and with more practice, he ought to be able to in- crease the distance of his jumps. Cooper did not seem at home on sec- ond base and he gummed many chances. He is a strong hitter, how- ever, and has a good arm. He pull- ed down several hard smashes from Genebach and Mraz in the game yes- terday, robbing Mraz of a three bag- ger at oneJ time by a clever leap- ing catch of a hot liner. Gilmartin Rack in Uniform Gilmartin, who laid himself up a week ago by slicing his thumb re- ported in a uniform yesterday after- noon. Gil worked a while at fielding and bunted a fesw balls but he will lay off the heavy work until next week. His thumb is still bound up and though healing rapidly is stiff and sore. Gilniartin is a first base- man a.nd will give Bowerman a bat- tle for the job the big sophomore has been holding down ever since Gil was laid up. Lundgren will probably send the two teams at each other again this after- noon. Scheidler, Glenn, Parsons, Crock- ett, Goldsmith, and Westcott are ready to pitch and several of them will see service this afternoon. Lundgren has given all his catchers except Morri- son, a chance behind the plate this week. Morrison has been playing first; base on the scrubs but he will 'likely don the big mit before long. The present Varsity lineup: Knode, short; Adams, third; Cooper, left; Bowerman, first; Ohlmacher, right; Langenhan, center; Garrett, second; Haidler, catch; Ruzicka, Saunders, or, Glenn, pitch.
