Lloyd C. Douglas of the Congregation- al church in his sermon Sunday morn- ing on "The Cyrenian Conscript." "Let us have a large use of the principle of conscription," said the speaker. "Strikes among shipbuilders at a time when the, very gravest need of the nation is for ships, should not be tolerated, and such men should bc drafted into the service." In regard to money conscription, the Reverend Douglas stated that dur- ing the second Liberty Loan, Governor Harding of Iowa authorized the ap- pointments in any county of a man to detain for investigation anyone who in the judgment of the committee failed to do his duty in the purchase of. bonds. It was found that 180 men who-.were financially able, refused to buy. Most of them invested on being given a second opportunity, but it was necessary in some cases to give the men 24 hours in jail to awaken them to a realization of their duties. The Reverend Douglas also urged the use of more drastic measures in dealing with the Gorman-Ameridan Alliance, for which he declared there is no present need. He declared that if the American citizen of German des- cent cannot yet understand how ser- iously his fatherland is in error, it would be well to teach hi'm immediate-- ly without temporizing.
