Editor, The Michigan Daily: It is really a pity that Mr. H. S. Liddell' sociological, philosophical, and historical studies should have been disturbed by Lieutenant Mullen's- recent appeal to the men of Michigan, as "interpreted" in Sunday's Daily. Strange it is that Mr. Liddell even found time to read that appeal. I wonder if Mr. Liddell knows that in the matter pf organizing our Uni- versity ,to meet war-needs, it is a ques- tion with Lieutenant Mullen not mere- ly of admirable ambition but of orders: to enroll the greatest possible num- ber of men in the R. 0. T. C.? I wonder if Mr. Liddell realizes that in the face of appalling difficulties Lieutenant Mullen, with consummate skill and tact, is achieving one suc- cess after another with such con- vincing sureness that when, through a e, former Unit- he Netherlands, d chaplain in ,ype for forefathers made us- I that we never will in ubject ourselves to the German Prussian rule. hasn't beaten us to it, s a title to one of the book, "How I Urge My series of misapprehensions in the over-rushed war department there was danger of his being superceded, some 1,800 men protested so vigorously that the mistakes were rectified in Wash- ington I wonder if Mr. Liddell appreciates the extraordinary opportunity offered to our students to become officers in the American army, instead of being SAYS INTROIDUCTION OF WOMEN PUTS PRESENTATION ON CON- NON COMEDY BASIS. It is a step directly contrary to Mich- igan spirit and tradition. The senti- ment of the student body towards wo- men in connection with the Union was strongly expressed at the last Band Bounce when they were denied mem- bership. The Union and its activities belong to the men of this University. A pre- requisite for participation in the opera has always been membership in the Union. How can that be changed now? Beside this, such a step would absolutely change the spirit and tra- dition of former operas because the introduction of women into the chorus and cast would put the production on a plane with every musical comedy and as such it could never hope to compete because of lack of drill, etc.; Furthermore, the big point of the opera from the standpoint of those who witness it is the fact that men are taking the women's parts. Ask any old grad's opinion on the matter. That is the reason more peo- ple go to see the opera than the play the Comedy club puts on. The ex- cuse for this step, is, I upderstand, that there are not enough' feminine types among the men. Can you im- agine anyone stepping out in front of Ted Wurster, last year's leading lady, and calling him a feminine type? If more men are necessary let the freshmen try out, but at least lets get the opinion of the campus before we let women in the opera. CLARK BISHOP, '19. Mid-West Debate Tryouts Changed Tryouts for the Mid-west debate cannot be held this evening because of the fact that Mason hall is one of the buildings affected by the recent closing order. They will be held this afternoon in room 302 Mason hall from 3 to 5 o'clock. I wonder, in fact, whether Mr. Lid- dell has heard that there is a war go- ing on? His whole argument, which is sufficiently well written to make a little mischief among the unthinking, is based on a false premise., He im- plies that students are being called away from their studies; whereas, in reality, it is only on the strength of their University training that they are being given the privilege of qualify- ing as officers-and in such a manner as to interfere scarcely at all with their regular work. The whole scheme is a triumph of brilliant and efficient organization, conceived and executed by "men of mature years and sober judgment." We need trained teachers by the thousand-that is why the col- lege men are given the ground-floor entry. But the world has less use than ever for pedants. S. P. LOCKWOOD, R.O. T. C. Y. W. C.
