PROSPECTS BRIGHTEN iN CROSS COUNTRY WORK "RED" DONNELLY AND SEVEN OTHER VARSITY MEN TAKE THREE-MILE JAUNT Eight Varsity men and six fresh- men appeared for cross-country prac- tice yesterday. "Red" Donnelly ap- peared in a track suit and took the regular three-mile jaunt with the rest of the men. Things are beginning to look bright for the cross-country in spite of the war and the poor response from theC student body. With Sedgwick, Com- loquay, Fuess, Langley, Maynard, Donnelly and Cuthbert, all Varsity sprinters, back into the running, Steve Farrell ought to have no trouble in choosing a representative aggregation. Sedgwick did some fine work on the cross-country team last year and will lead this year's quintet. Comloquay and Fuess were Sedg's running mates. Langley is a new man while May- nard is re-entering the hill-and-dale event. Tom was not out for the teamt last year. "Red" Donnelly is no new- comer in the long distance e'vent and will strengthen the team materially. Cuthbert has not done any sprinting for a year but while at the Ann Ar- bor high school was a star. The first casualty in the ranks was reportedyesterday. Bob Meehan, one of Farrell's dependables, is in the University hospital with an infected throat. It is hard to tell just how soon he will be ready to report for practice again. His absence will tem- porarily weaken the team. Steve has managed to obtain a "rub- ber" to, keep the men in trim. ALL WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAMS LOOK LIKE CHAMPS Sophomores Are Partly Handicapped by Loss of Two Star Players Prospects for 1917-18 basketball for women are bright indeed, with the possible exception of last year's fresh- men aggregation. Agnes Kennedy and Myrtle Baum, two of '20's star performers, are not back in school this year. However, the sophs still have Elsie Erley, Edna Daskam, Hazel Platt, and Florence Butler as a good start toward a team. This year's junior class, who were interclass champions in 1916, report their entire team of last year as back and out for the championship: Lucille Duff, _ Phyllis Egglestone, Doris Mc- Donald, Eva Herzberg, Ethel Glauz and Elizabeth McCormick. Once more the senior basketball vet- erans are planning on taking first place. In addition to their regular team of last year, viz: Marie Macauley, June Brooks, Beulah Smith, Clarissa Vyn and Louise Irish, they are cele- brating the return of Leila Wheeler, '18, formerly the most spectacular player of the 1917 team. Freshmen prospects are rather an unknown quantity as yet, but as this year's new class has made a creditable showing in all lines so far, there is no reason why ability to play basket- ball should prove an exception.
