With this nd in view, the Union has extended o them the invitation to attend the Yixers held at the Union every Sun- lay afternoon. WINTER SPORTS When the football season ends, and he thermoneter begins to lower, we >f the University quit the outdoors, aking our athletics inside with us. [his is especially true this year, with he institution of basketball as a major' port, and with the abandonment of Varsity hockey. But let us take the case of Dart- nouth. There, in a climate not mater- ally different from ours, students en- gage in annual winter sports, such as obogganing, skii-riding and skating. They make regularduniversitysports >f them, holding an annual mid-winter carnival, which is featured throughout he east. At Michigan we have excellent facil- ties for the development of winter sports. Situated in a hilly and rolling country, we have latent facilities for ;obogganing and skiing courses; with he new Barton Lake, we have excell- ent opportunities to hold skating car- iivals and ice-boating events. Our, proximity to Canada, where are locat- ed the greatest hockey teams in the world would assure us of good compet- tion without the attendant expense of transporation. All in all, Michigan should wake up, and not depend so much upon a gym- nasium for mid-winter athletics. Zoologists at present do not seem >verzealous to observe personally the nature of these gun-fish which go shooting through the water toward ar enemy ship. LOSS OF FUNDS THREATENS TO CRIPPLE LEADING COLLEGES Donations To War Organizations Keep Many From Schools No Cut In Faculty Thus Far Chicago, Jan. 12.-Loss of funds, due to the material reduction of students' tuition fees and the donations to the various war organizations which might otherwise have gone to the colleges, threaten to cripple the leading edu- cational institutions, was the opinion reached at the meeting of the asso- ciation of American colleges today. Many, colleges have announced a policy of rigid entrenchment. None of the largegschools thus far have gone to the length of curtailing faculties or reducing the salaries of the teach- ing staff. Dr. D. Clark Sanford, president of Clark college, announced a war pro. gram contingent upon the establish- ment of universal military training. The loss of each youth of at lea' aa year from his ordinary pursuits, he said, would probably make it neces- sary to cut the length of the college courses to three years without a cor responding reduction in the curri- culum.
