Westerman, for a num- ber of years a faculty member of the University School- of Music, is attain- ing success as song leader at Camp MacArthur, Waco, Texas, where many Ann Arbor boys are stationed. Westerman was appointed song leader of the camp by the war depart- ment through a commission for camp activities, only a few weeks ago. He at once entered energetically into his work. Just before Christmas he held a mammoth "sing." The Waco paers devoted columns to the event, prais- ing Westermpn and his success in arousing so enthusiastic a response from both the boys and the civilian populace. One article says: "With those 400 band pieces crash- ing out the music of the stirring songs that have sprung up all over the land, with Westerman jumping from one side to another of the platform, with a score of picked singers on the plat- form straining their throats to "beat the band," that wonderful noise must have echoed like the "shot fired round the world," until it disturbed friend Kaiser Bill's slumbers."
