Early in the war, the British were reminded of the fact that their hold on Egypt was not as secure as they had heretofore been led to believe. Passing reference might here be made to the Turkish attacks on the Suez canal in the fall of 1914 and in 1915. In the latter attack the Turks got as far as the canal, and in fact attempt- ed to cross it, but were repulsed with heavy casulties. It soon became apparent, that his Majesty's government must needs take vigorous steps to safeguard the canal, which has rightly been termed the "heart of the British Empire." An army was therefore despatched to the Sinai peninsula, with its base in Egypt, for the invasion of Palestine. This army made some progress in the latter part of 1916 and the first part of the succeeding year, but owing to inadequate reserves it was forced to suspend operations until a few months ago. The victorious march northward was resumed early in November of this year, and last Saturday it result- ed in the capture of the holy city. In order to accomplish their purpose, the British built a railroad through the desert of the Sinai peninsula, and on this railroad they depended for all their 'supplies, dinclding water. Anyone acquainted with the penin- sula, will appreciate the great hard- ships that the troops must have ex- perienced in. their march northward. Hundreds of miles of desert with no vegetation or water, scorched by the blistering sun, had to be crossed. Add to that a brave and determined enemy -for whatever may be said of the Turks, no well-informed person will deny the fact that they are a brave people-and we begin to get a faint idea of the immense difficulties that had to be overcome. However, the British troops composed of brave vet- erans of Gallipoli and other battles, kept steadily forward and were finally rewarded with the occupation of large parts of the holy land. It is generally believed, that the ul- tiinate objective of the British arm- ies in Palestine is Aleppo (or Haleb) about 250 miles north of Jerusalem. If they should be able to capture and hold Aleppo, it will then not be a difficult matter to march on to Diarbekr and there join hands with the' British force marching north of Baghdad. Should this plan mature and be carried out successfully, it will readily be seen that well nigh three fourths of Turkey will have been liberated from the atrocious rule of the Turks. ' e annual dance is called the Was- ington Prom and will be held Feb. 21, as in past years. Ohio State may be selected as the site for hospital for crippled and in- digent children. The commission in charge favor the campus as the best situation. It was brought out at the meeting that the Universities of Mich- igan and Minnesota have institutions of this kind in connection with their colleges of medicine. Misfit cadet uniforms are being re- turned to the manufacturers for alter- ations by the University of Illinois. This, together with the fact that some of tle uniforms have not yet been delivered, will delay distribution of the equipment for some time. Mid-semester reports at Vanderbilt college show that scholarship among the freshmen is better than that of last year despite war agitation. Even at that , 35 per cent of the freshmen were conditioned. " i ""'- ;) SUl Give Her WHO? WHY,3 SOME0 n For your Xmtas Candies, Cigars, Kodaks, Staiionery and r. That the standing of Harvard would be imperiled were the draft age lower- ed to 19, is the opinion of Prof. Robert M. Johnson, chairman of the univer- sity committee in military affairs. "If the draft age were lowered to 19, it seems highly probable that Harvard would be overtaken by the same sort of a situation as has developed during these last three years at Oxford and Cambridge. I have been told that there are no more than 120 undergrad- uates at either of these institutions. "Radical measures should be taken to safeguard the university and at the same time help the country. I think that there might be formed a military college with a three years' course, on the same general lines as West Point." Freshman women at the University of Wisconsin who have mid-semester grades below standard will be tutored by their junior advisors. The tutoring system was organized yesterday when all Junior women registered the sub- jects in which they could tutor and the hours they had free for the work. FRENCH CHILDREN CLOTHED BY NEW RED CROSS UNIT Under the direction of Mrs. A. A. Schryver, a new circle of Red Cross workers has been formed, which will devote its time to the renovation of old garments and turning them into wearing apparel for the Belgian and French children. These women form another of the groups of Red Cross workers devoting their time to var- ious phases of war work. Materials, old and new, and gar- ments of any kind in which there is any good material are much desired. Men's old suits and overcoats, and women's and children's discarded or out-grown garments of all kinds should be delivered at once to Mrs. Louis P. Hall at the Library on Huron street, or to Mrs. Schryver, 405 East University. While it is desirable that the garments be cleaned before they are sent, it is not imperative. French and Belgian childre are badly in need of warm garments and all discarded clothes can be utilized for them in some way.
