THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRI]
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
ANN ARBOR
President's Office
June 4, 1918.
To the Students of the University:-
In the present crisis you are anxious to do your full duty. I need not
suggest that it is your duty to answer your country's call whenever it
comes and to answer it willingly and with patriotic enthusiasm. If you
have reached the inimum age of service, it may be your duty to go at
once without waiting for the call. Each must decide this question for
himself. But if you are not subject to call and have not completed your
university course, do not forget that you serve your country by continu-
ing your university work. Trained men and women will be needed in in-
creasing numbers for war service as well as for the great constructive
work that must follow the war. That trained service is the best service,
whether the field of activity be at the front or at home, cannot admit of
doubt. The Government recognizes this and urges young people to re-
main in school. A statement issued April 5, 1918, over the signatures of
the Secretary of War, the Secretary of the Navy and other government offi-
cials contains the following:
"Nothing can possibly be gained by boys do-
ing otherwise than to continue in school, laying
the v0ry best possible foundation for subsequent
training. If they are wanted, they will be called.
"Boys should be urged, as a patriotic duty, to
remain in school to the completion of the high
school course, and in increasing numbers to
enter upon college and university courses."
President Wilson has particularly urged young people to avail them-
selves, if not called to active service, of the opportunities offered by the col-
leges and technical schools of the country.

In view of the foregoing, this is my advice: Until called, continue your
university work. If possible, take advantage of the summer term.to hasten
your graduation. Return at the opening of the next university year and
bring new students with you. By so doing you will serve the University
and the cause.
H. B. HUTCHINS,
President.
