The special stu- dents in the first detachment are com- pleting their courses as rapidly as possible, and are anxiously awaiting orders, which will probably be receiv- ed from! the war department before the beginning of next week. Approximately, 460 men will be housed in Waterman gymnasium, ac- cording to the plans now being work- ed out. The entire gymnasium floor, and the running track will be devot- ed to regulation army cots. Capt. Ralph H. Durkee's office will be lo- cated where the old R. O. T. C. of- fices were situated. The office of the battalion sergeant major will adjoin that of Captain Durkee. Will Organize Battalion With the exception of sufficient gymnasium apparatus for the sum- mner session students at the club house on Ferry field, the entire ath- letic equipment will be locked up in Dr. George A. May's office. It is the intention of Captain Dur- kee to organize three companies from the men in, the second detachment, forming a battalion of war strength. These will begin about July 1, 1918, with the ex- ception of the University hospital ap- pointments, which have already be- gun as many of the former holders of these positions have been called into army service. Some of the men will not take interneships, but will go into army or navy work at once. They do not know when they will be called but most of them have al- ready received orders to be ready to report on 48 hours' notice. The list follows: F. M. Carpenters to Finish Building Members of the carpentry squad have . succeeded in putting the roof on the new building facing south Uni- versity avenue, and expect to finish their work by the end of the week In order to rush the building to com- pletion, 12 men from the gas engine squad were chosen to aid the car- penters. The work on the building will be a model for the future train- ing detachments detailed here. Whether or not week-end passes will be granted to the men desiring to make their last farewell to their relatives, families, and friends, de- pends on the receipt of travelling or- ders from Washington before that time. The majority of the men will finish their work before Saturday. Intensive drills will be held until definite instructions are received. To Hold Alien Day On Friday afternoon about 30 mem- bers of the first detachment will. be escorted by an armed body guard to the circuit court, where they will be made citizens of the United States. It is not known whether the cade band will accompany them, but the officials of the organization plan to have some music to celebrate the oc- casion.
