d BOOKS OF THE DAY 'he Triumph of Youth, by Jacob sserman, translated from the Ger- n by Otto P. Schinnerer. Boni and eright, New York, $2.50. his is the first of Wasserman's sral historical novels to be trans- d into the English language. It ifferent, different from most books are given to the American reader, for that reason most enjoyable ding. he book is half a fairy story, half istorical novel, the relating of the its in'the life of a boy endowed 1i the gift of poetry and a powerful gination. The story takes place Germany during the third decade he 17th century. * is a story, of those dark days a every outstanding person, wbleth- easant, freeman or noble, was in ger of being accused of witchcraft, of the day when accusation meant viction and death in the flames; of ,e days when the odor of burned ises was always lingering in the osphere. h young Baron Ernest, the central r4 of the story, is accused of witch- t in the course of events, because is genius for telling stories and ,use he dared to tell his uncle, the op, that he disagreed with the ey of burning witches, whom he n'ot believe were in communion . the devil. Here Wasserman ana- s the thoughts of the lad and re- veals an interesting study of his in- ner nature. Then to climax the story, a rebel- lion of the children of the district rescues the young Baron from death. The rebellion symbolizes the ever talked of "revolt of youth" against' the dogmatism of the older genera- tion, and here is used against the church. Wasserman, in his ever enjoyable style, has painted a picture of the age that gives the reader food for ,though. Thoughts of what his an- cestors lived through, the horror of their days and sleepless nights. It may well make one thankful that he was born in the present rather than' in those dismal days of the 17th cen-] tury. The author has given us a book that is lacking the us.ual love story of the modern, trite American novel, and yet the book is not lacking in passion.. There is not present the winning of a beautiful maid, but rather the win- ning of an ideal; not the overcoming of hostile suitors, butthesovercoming of foolish, inhuman ideas. This production of the pen of Jacob Wasserman is a most entertaining book. It is not the equal of "The' World's Illusion," but at that it is written by the same author, and is better than the trash one must read if he amuses himself with the products of the present day American authors. -J.
