Notre Dame backup Tom Krug,
pressed into service after sophomore
Ron Powlus broke his arm, threw for
two touchdowns and rallied the No. 8
Irish to a 35-17 victory Saturday over
Navy.
Powlus, who missed his freshman
season with a broken collarbone, is out
for the rest of the year after breaking his
left humerus, the bone that leads from
the elbow to the shoulder. Powlus was
taken to a local hospital, and surgery
was a possibility.
Krug faced a daunting task when he
went in with about 11 minutes left in the
third quarter. The junior had played
only 6minutes, 52 seconds this season,
had never thrown a pass and the Irish
(8-2) were trailing 17-14.
But six minutes later, Krug connected

with Derrick Mayes on a42-yard touch-
down to put the Irish ahead21-14. Krug
barely had time to take a breather when
Lyron Cobbins intercepted Ben Fay's
pass on the first play of Navy's next
series.
Krug tried to go to Marc Edwards
in the end zone, but the ball was
fumbled and recovered by Navy (3-
5). The Midshipmen were called for
illegal participation, however, and
Krug hit Mayes with a 3-yard TD pass
to make it 28-17.
Tailback Autry Denson's24-yard run
with 10:54 left capped Notre Dame's
scoring.
Krug finished the day 5-for-8 for
90 yards. Mayes caught four passes
for 81 yards. He needs 29 more yards
to set Notre Dame's career record of
2,493 receiving yards, held by Tim
Brown.

No. 1 Nebraska 73, Iowa St. 14
Ahman Green ran for 176 yards and
scored four touchdowns to lead No. I
Nebraska past Iowa State 73-14 Satur-,
day, stealing the spotlight from once-
suspended Husker Lawrence Phillips.
Nebraska (9-0, 5-0 Big Eight)
scored on its first 10 possessions and
led 20-0 before Iowa State quarter-
back Todd Bandhauer's 15-yard scor-
ing pass to Ed Williams in the second
quarter.
Nebraskathen scored46straightpoints.
The 73 points were the most ever by
Nebraska against Iowa State (3-6, 1-4). ,
No.5 Tennessee 42, Southern Mis-
sissippi 0
No. 5 Tennessee forced five turn-
overs, three setting up touchdowns, and
Ray Austin blocked a punt for a TD as
the Volunteers beat Southern Missis-
sippi 42-0 Saturday.

The Vols (8-1) were lackluster wn
offense, with usually reliable receivers
dropping nine catchable balls. But with
the field position afforded by two inter-
ceptions and a fumble recovery deep h
Southern Miss territory, the offense
didn't have to be at its best.
Peyton Manning completed 20-f-
39 for 230 yards and two touchdowns
and also ran for a TD.
Jay Graham had 108 yards and two
TDs in 26 carries, his eighth 100-yard
game of the year.
The story of the day was the Tennes-
see defense, which got its second shit-
out of the season.
Southern Mississippi (4-5) managed
just 10 first downs and got no closer
than the Tennessee 38. The Golden
Eagles had 142 yards of total offense,
including just 3 yards rushing in 6
attempts.
