Antonio Banderas is taking film au- diences across America on the ride of their lives. Is he the next Tom Cruise? The next Denzel Washington? All we know for sure is that this vibrant actor is taking Hollywood by storm; he gives fans a new sex symbol on which to feast their eyes. Perhaps most remember him first playing Tom Hanks' companion in the critically acclaimed 1993 film, "Phila- delphia." But his career began long be- fore that film. Over 43 films, Banderas has caught Hollywood's attention. Un- der Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, Banderas starred in films such as "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" (1988) and "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!" (1990) for which he earned the Spanish equivalent of a Best Actor Oscar nomination. With his American debut in the 1992's "The Mambo Kings," Banderas seized the opportunity to add to a resume that already included over 30 Spanish-language films at the time. In this film, American audi- ences got their first glimpse of the actor as he portrayed an immigrant Cuban musician. But his American career really took flight afterhis monumental role as com- passionate Miguel Alvarez in Jonathan Demme's "Philadelphia." Then last year, he took his suave and debonair style up against Hollywood hunks Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in the haunting "Interview with the Vampire." Besides these Hollywood blockbusters, Banderas performed in such smaller- scale pictures as "The House of the Spirits" (1993) with Meryl Streep, and in this year's "Miami Rhapsody" oppo- site Sarah Jessica Parker. With four films thus far in 1995 and another five coming soon, Banderas has quickly become a household name. This year he has played everything from a psychopathic killer who chal- lenges professional murderer Sylvester Stallone in Richard Donner's "Assassins" to a love-hun- gry Cuban nurse in the aforemen- tioned "Miami Rhapsody." His wild adventures continued in his role as a violent Mariachi in director Robert Rodriguez's pulp western, "Des- perado." He also appeared opposite Rebecca De Mornay in the recently- released thriller "Never Talk to Strang- ers." One should not find it a surprise that Banderas' daily planner is al- ready filled with major upcoming events. His future entails a pair of films by Rodriguez. "Four Rooms" utilizes the talents of Rodriguez, "Look, just because I'm dating ultra-ditz Melanie Griffith doesn't mean I can't play sensitive roles like Miguel in 'Philidelphia.'"
