Kickers take Cup from Eastern By Avi Ebenstein For the Daily Michigan men's soccer fans, stop worrying. The Washtenaw Cup is back where in Ann Arbor. In a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over Eastern Michi- gan, the Michigan men's soccer team reclaimed the cup in the third year of this annual contest. The Wolverines lost the last two Washtenaw Cups, but this year the Eagles go home losers. Michigan play- ers could not hide their excitement. "This was a fantastic game - I'm excited," senior Ian Kurth said. "It's sweet for us because we not only won the game, we won the cup," coach Steve Burns said. Also, Burns cited the way the win- ning goal was scored as a reason for Wolverine delight. "The last two years, they have scored on us with an indirection. We even called the play 'Eastern' when we used it on other schools. Today, we called it 'Western' and it won the game." Freshman Blake Novotny scored the goal on a pass from Mike Daily. "We worked on it in practice (Tues- day). We clear out the far side and then the player passes it across." The play worked to perfection and Novotny stood all alone in front of the open goal. Mike Daily sent the pass to Novotny, as the Eastern Michigan play- ers swarmed to Daily. Novotny con- verted, slamming the ball into the goal. "That was fun," said Novotny. The entire game was a close, physi- cal contest. Neither team could convert during regulation. Though Eastern con- trolled much of the first half, the Wol- verines recovered. Eastern Michigan is known as a team which uses its athletic ability to head the ball and play a physical game. The Eagles also feature an aggres- sive attack.
