D rmot at Yale Tibekr- i oc t Navy total points: PHO0NE: Spikers spli M By Monica Polakov Daily Sports Writer The loss of one player is all it takes to throw off the balance of a team. Just ask the Michigan volleyball team. When outside hitter Kristen Ruschiensky injured her knee during the second match of the Indi ana game Friday, the team suffered for the rest of the week- end. The Wolverines (10-6 overall, 4-2 Big Ten) beat Indiana but fell apart in Saturday's game against Illinois. The weekend results leave them in a third place tie with Wisconsin in the Big Ten. Michigan beat Indiana 15-12,15-9 and 15-12. The Wolverines kept the Hoo- siers' best player, outside hitter Jennifer Magelson, from being a big offensive threat. Magelson had only four kills and made eight errors. Michigan's defense performed well with solid blocking from Sarah Jackson and Suzy O'Donnell. Freshman outside it with Big Ten foes hitter Karen Chase also had a great game. Friday was her, first full night of play this season. However, Michigan struggled in Saturday's game against Illinois (11-4 overall, 2-4 Big Ten). The Wolverines lost 8-15, 14-16 and 10-15. Michigan had many chances to knock off the Illini. The Wolverines led, 8-0, in the first match, 13-8, in the second and, 10-0, in the third. However, Illinois ral- lied to win all three matches. In addition, the loss of Ruschiensky affected Michigan's offensive play. The offense turned into a one-woman team. Senior co-captain Shannon Brownlee had 20 kills and was successful on 42 percent of her attacks. "We didn't play very well against Illi- nois," Giovanazzi said. "Only one player played well, Shannon Brownlee. Every- one else had average or subpar nights." Senior co-captain Suzy O'Donnell agreed. "Blocking was terrible, serving was not so great and our side-out was not so good," she said. "We're disappointedwith the loss." Giovannazi believes that Illinois won because it is a young team that came into Saturday's matchup after a huge loss at Michigan State. Another reason for Michigan's loss was the absence of Ruschiensky. "People weren't sure about responsi- bility," Michigan volleyball coach Greg Giovannazi said. "(The loss of Ruschiensky), disrupted our offensive patterns " Illinois' main threat Emi Borske had a great night. The sophomore registered 23 kills and 18 digs. The Wolverines face Minnesota and Wisconsin this weekend at home in Michigan's "Rock the House" match Ruschiensky will find out today whether or not she will be able to play in the match.
