The Seattle Mariners defeated the California Angels, 9-1, in a one-game
playoff at the Kingdome yesterday. The victory puts Seattle, which tied
California for the American League West title, in the postseason. The
Mariners will face the New York Yankees today in the first game of a
best-of-five game series.

Let the Big Ten battles begin
Wolverines ready to return to action against league foes

The nonconference portion of
Michigan's schedule is complete, so
it's time for the Wolverines to turn their
focus back to the Big Ten race.
Michigan (1-0 Big Ten, 5-0 over-
all) already has a conference win - a
38-14 thumping of Illinois - under
its belt.
The path to Pasadena resumes this
weekend as the Wildcats come to
Michigan Stadium Saturday at 12:30
p.m.
Northwestern (1-0, 3-1) beat Indiana
last week and could very well be 4-0
overall, but the Wildcats gave away a
game to Miami (Ohio). Northwestern
led by 21 but couldn't hold on in the
end.
The game marks Michigan's first
contest against Northwestern since
1992. Playing the Wildcats will be a
change from Miami, who the Wolver-
ines faced for the first time since 1924,
and Memphis, who they played for the
first time ever.
"We're getting back to teams we're

more familiar with, the teams we're
rivals with," senior wide receiver Amani
Toomer said. "Now we're getting back
to our goal - the Rose Bowl."
Michigan coach Lloyd Carr has had a
good chance to play plenty of young
players. Now he'll have to see how they
fare against the conference teams.
The Wolverines have been able to
develop freshman cornerback Charles
Woodson and freshman tailback
Clarence Williams, among others.
"The good news is we're coming out
of the nonconference part of our sched-
ule with a lot of young players who are
improved," Carr said. "The attitude on
this football team is outstanding. It's a
fun group."
Quarterback Scott Dreisbach remains
sidelined with a thumb injury. Brian
Griese is expected to start against the
Wildcats as well as the next game at
Indiana.
Other than that, the Wolverines are
injury-free.
"We're going into the meaty part of
the Big Ten schedule in relatively good
health," Carr said. "We're looking for-

ward to playing Northwestern this Sat-
urday."
The Wolverines will certainly be
more wary of Northwestern than they
would have been at the beginning of the
season.
The Wildcats' surprising start has
caught everyone's eyes. The season-
opening victory at Notre Dame will be
one game everyone will be talking about
all season.
"Anytime a team can go into South
Bend and hold Notre Dame to 15 points,
that says something about your team,"
Carr said.
Two convincing wins the past
couple of weeks over Air Force and
Indiana will give the Wildcats more
confidence coming into Ann Arbor
this weekend.
Northwestern comes into the game
tied with Michigan and Wisconsin for
the top spot in the conference.
The last time Michigan faced a ranked
Northwestern team - No. 25 in this
week's AP poll -was 1975. The Wol-
verines soundly whipped the Wildcats
69-0 in Ann Arbor.
