14 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 29, 1995 MAT"CHUPS Continued from page 10 create time for themselves in the pocket to throw. Michigan's line is simply so dominant that the protec- tion normally provided by an offen- sive line is moot. Mobile quarterbacks such as Illi- nois' Johnny Johnson weren't able to free themselves up to throw against Michigan, and it would be hard to believe that the less-elusive Ricketts can find his receivers down field. He has scrambled for 43 yards this sea- son. It's not often that a team's defen- sive line overshadows the secondary in its ability to stop the passing game, but that's been the case this year for Michigan and will continue to be this Saturday. Advantage: Michigan Special teams: Miami punter Ja- son Cheney better have a bionic leg - he'll be booting more balls Satur- day than the Djibouti national soccer team. Thankfully, he has a 42.2 yard punting average, which will be cru- cial in keeping Michigan's running attack pinned deep in its own end of the field. The news is less encouraging for Miami's field goal kicker, Chad Seitz, who has converted only seven of his 13 attempts. Nate DeLong and Paul Peristeris have handled Michigan's punting du- ties with slightly more distinction than last year's performances. Placekicker Remy Hamilton is one of the nation's best. Advantage: Michigan Overall: Once Michigan gets its running game going, the game may crumble into a laugher. Even if the Wolverines fail to click on offense, it's hard to conceive Miami making much of a dent on the scoreboard. Something along the lines of Michigan's 24-7 victory over Mem- phis sounds about right. Prediction: Michigan 34, Miami 10. MIAMI Continued from page 10 carry. As for the Miami defense, itis geared heavily to stop the run. Miami has al- lowed only 2.2 yards per carry and has given up just one rushing touchdown on the season. Carr had been hoping Dreisbach would have his best game yet as a Wolverine throwing against Miami. Now Griese will have to step up in his first game. The Wolverines do feel they will be able to pass against Miami, though. "In my view, that kind of defense is overcommitted to the run," said Carr of Miami's scheme. "We need to make them be more honest and if we can throw the ball we will." In spite of Dreisbach's injury, Carr doesn't plan on simplifying the offense to help out Griese. "He is a very intelligent kid who has a strong grasp of what we're trying to do," Carr said. "I always thought Brian would be a good quarterback. The only thing he lacks is experience." Experience he will begin getting Sat- urday. ., .s, .,.. v..;.,,. ..., e.. r.....,. ....:.. ~s ...,.. ... -Y, ., .. .. ,,.. r, z:.:, :..., x "...,..,. ..,..... .<_. ... ... .... :..... ter, ....... .. :..,,.... ,., .....:: .. ... _. ,.... .,........,........ r. ... s. .M1 .....,.... r...... .
