'Crude Oasis' Is paradise lost
In "The Crude Oasis," directed by Alex Graves, Jennifer Taylor stars as Karen Webb, a lonely housewife with an
adulterous husband, who suffers from a recurring nightmare featuring an ominous, intriguing stranger. After
unsuccessfully attempting to commit suicide, Karen discovers that an attendant at a gas station is the man from
her dreams. She is immediately compelled to meet this man, and once she does, connections between her, the
man and her husband become quite clear. This film focuses on many of the psychological aspects of loneliness,
yet it manages to be somewhat incoherent at times. Although this problem may be deliberately included, it
detracts from the movie. In the end, this stagnant work may be classified as a movie based more on style than
substance. At the Michigan tonight at 9:15.

ATLANTIC CITY (AP) -- The
swimsuit gimmick worked: About
2.1 million more households tuned
in to the Miss America Pageant this
year.
NBC's three-hour telecast Sat-
urday night was seen in 15.7 mil-
lion households, compared with
13.6 million last year, Nielsen Me-
dia Research said Thursday.
Still, the rating was the third-low-
est in pageant history, after the 1994
and 1992 shows. Ratings peaked in
1961, at 41.8, with a 75 share.
The pageant, which has been in a
ratings slide for decades, received a
16.4 rating and 31 share this year.
The pageant, broadcast live from
coast to coast for the first time,
featured a call-in poll on whether to
hold the swimsuit competition.

Viewers voted 4-to-1 in favor of
swimsuits. Almost 1 million votes
were registered.
The rating is a percentage of the
nation's 95.9 million TV house-
holds. One rating point represents
959,000 homes. The share is the
percentage of in-use sets tuned to a
particular program.
Pageant President Leonard Horn
said the poll was only part of the
appeal this year.
"We had a popular Miss
America. We had the swimsuit poll.
We had a 75th anniversary. We had
a great show last year. We had a lot
of visibility. It's a combination of
all those things," he said. "All I
know is I'm very pleased."
The 1994 ratings were the low-
est ever.
