10A - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, September 21, 1995 Women's golf confident heading into Illinois for Wildcat Invitational Oy Avi Ebenstein For the Daily The Michigan's women's golfteam, coming off an impressive showing at the Spartan Fall Invitational, will par- ticipate in the Wildcat Invitational in Flossmoor, Ill., Sunday and Monday. The Wolverines placed second in East Lansing out ofa field of 18 and pleased coach Kathy Teichert. "I didn't expect us to start out so well," Teichert said. "Our team was" very consistent, with very few high scores to pull the team down." Teichert, however, thought that Michigan could have closed on Wis- consin, after trailing the Badgers by 10 strokes entering the final round. "We were down 10 and I thought we could make it up, but we only made up six strokes," she said. But she certainly is optimistic about the team's future. "You look at where we have been and where we are going," she said. "The team is headed straight up." Senior captain Shannon McDonald noted the successful play of the fresh- men. "The freshmen played so well as a group and contributed so much to the team," McDonald said. This weekend, the team faces a com- petitive field at the two-day Wildcat ff Invitational. Indiana and Ohio State should pro- vide the stiffest competition. "I think we can do well," Teichert said. "This will be a good indicator of our potential for the rest of the season." The victory evened its all- time series with the Cardinals to 3-3. In the past week, the squad has blanked Stanford, Temple and Westchester. The win matched the Wolverines' longest winning streak since Septem- ber 1993, when they opened the sea- son with five straight victories. Michi- gan is currently 6-2 overall. Goalie Rachel Geisthardt notched her fourth consecutive shutout, equal- ing her career best for a season, and raising her career total to 14.5. To date, the senior has posted a 0.77 goals-against average, with an .872 save percentage. All of Geisthardt's numbers have improved considerably from the 1994 campaign. Her goals- against average is down 1.5 and her saves are up a full 10th of a point.She is slowly approaching her all-time best goals-against mark of .588, set in 1993 when she allowed a paltry five goals. Geisthardt's four saves yester- day boosted her season total to 41.
