FOOTBALL
Continued from page l
Outside linebacker David Bowens,
cornerback Charles Woodson and run-
ning back Clarence Williams have all
made significant contributions in
Michigan's first two wins. Woodson
and Bowens have started.
Bowens has made four tackles in
his first two games and Woodson
seven.
For his part, Williams has gained
21 yards on seven carries and he made
his first catch, good for .22 yards,
They haven't

Lloyd Carr,
Michigan football coach, on
the Wolverine defense
Saturday against the Illini.
"That's always a surprise this early
in the season when a true freshman
plays that well," Carr said ofthe three.
While Carr has been happy with
what he's seen from this Wolverine
team, he's far from satisfied.
"What we want to do is win with
improvement," Carr said. "Tojust win
each week isn't enough."

Trent Zenkewicz mounts a pass rush against Virginia quarterback Tim Sherman. Zenkewicz is an integral part of the solid defense which has been one of Michigan's
strengths through the first two games of the season.

FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

King honored as
player of the week

By Scott Burton
Daily Sports Writer
Michigan's secondary didn't strike
much fear in opposing quarterbacks
last season. But reading the Wolverine
defense has become a much more diffi-
cult prospect this season with the emer-
gence of junior strong safety Steve
King.
King was named the Big Ten Defen-
sive Player of the Week after recording
a team-high 13 tackles in Michigan's
38-14 victory over Illinois Saturday.
His season totals of 21 tackles and 18
solo tackles are also tops on the team.
"I don't know how I've gotten so
many tackles," King said. "I just like to
fly around and mix it up a lot."
King is not the only Wolverine mak-
ingan impact with his agility. Michigan
attributed a lot of its success against
Illinois to its overall advantage in team
speed.
"That's something we've worked a
lot about with (strength and condition-
ing coach) Mike Gittelson-to pick up
team speed, " King said.
INJURY UPDATE: Junior free safety
Chuck Winters sat out Saturday's con-
test after getting banged up last week.
Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said that

he withheld Winters from the lineup
because he didn't demonstrate enough
mobility in a pregame warmup.
Winters is expected to return to the
lineup against Memphis Saturday, al-
though it is still uncertain whether he
will start.
Outside linebacker Brent Blackwell
returned to practice this week, but is not
at a conditioning level where he can
play in a game situation. But Carr is
encouraged by the play of sophomore
Mike Elston and Chris Singletary in
his place.
THE LUCK OF THE IRISH: The Wol-
verines probably wouldn't tell you they
were shocked by their 24-point margin
of victory over Illinois, although the
betting line was even going into the
game.
But they sure were mystified by
Northwestern's 17-15 victory over then-
No. 9 Notre Dame Saturday.
In a game that will go down as per-
haps the biggest upset of the decade, the
Wildcats shocked a Notre Dame team
that was a 27-point favorite. North-
western was expected to be a basement-
level team in the Big Ten, but now has
the 28th-most votes in this week's As-
sociated Press Top 25 poll.

lust like to fly

up a lot! "
-Steve King
Michigan defensive back

"That was a surprise," Michigan of-
fensive lineman Rod Payne said. "It's
just funny that we play Northwestern
this year instead of Notre Dame."
Many Wolverines heard the North-
western score announced on Illinois'
P.A. system during the second-half of
the Illini contest. Others, understand-
ably, were just a little too wrapped up in
what Michigan was doing to pay any
attention to the result.
"Somebody told me, and I told them
to be quiet. I wasn't interested," Carr
said.
