From having Beavis pay tribute to his
lyrical skill by yelling "It's a r r
psychobilly freakout" to playing to r-Y
receptive audiences on the recent
White Zombie tour, the Reverend
Horton Heat has had some pretty
I'. good things happen to him in the last
year. With last summer's release,
" "Liquor in the Front," the good
Reverend (in actuality a gentleman
named Jim Heath) once again proved
his substantial rockabilly/Sub Pop
talent to be the genuine article, but
reaching a wider audience because of
\- his new affiliation with Interscope.
One of the suavest of the suave slime
rockers, Heat is virtually the
character-made-flesh of Andy Griffith 4 .
( ~In "A Face in the Crowd" if he hadt
been on amphetamines instead of
booze. If you liked the soundtrack
from "Pulp Fiction," you'll like this.k
So see him and his boys at St.
Andrew's Hall on Sunday. Doors areY,

Supersuckers, ex-labelmates of the
Reverend hisself, open. Be there or

Suck in the atmosphere of the Supersuckers{M
GO*SEE "T The rowdy rock of the Supersuckers will be permeating St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit on Sunday night when they play between
the lovely Hagfish and the good Reverend Horton Heat. The Supersuckers wild variety of bare-bones, muscle-car punk and
HTGT southern rock will be sure to tickle your fancy. The wackiness of these whacked out guys will be worth more than just the
low $10 ticket price. "We've always embraced the basic tenets as established by the Nuge and Satan," explained
Supersuckers' bassist / front man Ed "Eddie" Spaghetti. Any band that claims a decade of bad pot and Triumph as the

If you close your eyes, pop some
mind altering drugs, and gather
twenty of your closest friends to
spin, groove and pedal falafel
around you, Phish's "A Live One"
might almost seem as good as the
real thing.
A double album has given Trey
Anastasio and the boys the freedom
to include full-blown jam sessions
not found entirely on their other
commercial recordings. "Tweezer"
tops the list at 30:55.
One of the highlights of the double
album is the impromptu human beat-
box rap in the middle of "You En-
joy Myself." Compare the 20 minute
version of this song on "A Live
One" to the original recxording on
1 988's "Junta," and you realize how
constricted it was the first time
around. Phish also grooves out on
other fan favorites like "Bouncing
Around the Room" and "Stash."
A word of advice to non-fans: if
you're one of those people who com-
plain ceaselessly about bans that

jam (i.e. the Grateful Dead, Blues
Traveler, t'h e Allman Brothers),
don't even s.ttempt to look at this
album. Run, just run. Leave it for
the vagabou ds who need a better
copy of son gs they already have on
bootlegs stashed in their underwear
drawer.
A word of advice to Phish-heads:
It's a great album... but at the same
time, it's nothing you haven't al-
ready seen, bieard, or experienced at
a Phish shorv. You won't find any-
thing on heii. that you don't already
have on thc se bootlegs stashed in
your under'awear drawer.

Jason Weaver
Love Ambition
Motown Records
Ever wonder who that unknown kid
behind the singing voice of Simba, the
main cartoom character of Disney's "The
Lion King," uvas? Who was that guy who
embedded"HiakunaMatata"in the minds
of millions, }Koung and old? He's 16-year
old Jason We aver, and with his recently-
released debut LP, Weaver "Can't Wait
to be King" of R&B. Much like Simba,
Weaver still has some learning to do, but
he's got tim,. He definitely has potential.
"Lover Ambition" boasts some amaz-
ingly excellent smooth-groove cuts. The

slow-sung title track tops the list with its
"up and down baby" refrain. It can, how-
ever, be surmised that Weaver has no
personal experience with that, else his
voice wouldn't be so high-pitched. And
he'd have some hairs on his chin. Faster-
paced, and equally fantastic, is "So in
Love," and the rhythmic-bass "Ordinary
Guy" deserves mention, too. Weaver's
soprano-voiced staccato performance here
is a nice, rarely successfully-tried feat.
But, there are a few problems. Prob-
lem number one: Weaver's attempted
remake of the Isley brothers' "For the
Love of You." It seems that every singer
wants to make a decent I.B. remake;
and every one of them fails miserably.
Weaver is no exception. His higher-
pitched voice is unable to correctly cap-
ture the song's romantic mood like the
Isley Brothers could (hairy chins and
all). In "I Can't Stand the Pain,"
Weaver's performance, the worst of the
CD's nine songs, dishes more hurt than
he could ever take.
One shouldn't dwell much on
Weaver's mistakes. The positive as-
pects of "Love Ambition" more than
outweigh its weaker parts. We've heard
him as Simba; we've seen and heard
him as Michael Jackson (ABC
miniseries "The Jacksons: An Ameri-
can Dream"). Now we see Jason. I'm
starting to like what I see.
