RECORDS Continued from page 11 Pram Sargasso Sea Too Pure Pram's third LP finds the band taking a different turn from their last full-length, the recently reis- sued "Helium." The sense of ran- dom chaos which was present on their earlier releases has been re- placed by more coherent song struc- tures, and in doing this Pram have exchanged much of their maniacal tendencies for a genuine sense of beauty. "Sargasso Sea" is often reminis- cent of a cool-flavored ambient record, but with enough of Pram's own sound injected into it. Cheap keyboard sounds replace vibra- phones, flutes, and organs on many of the tracks, but this works mainly because Pram refuse to draw to much attention to any individual sound by making sure each one plays an important part in the song. There's a definite sense of sad- ness on "Sargasso Sea" that stretches far beyond the lyrics. Even the more upbeat sounding tunes, such as "Little Scars" and "Crooked Tiles" have a genuine feeling of uneasiness, while "Louse Threads" subtly builds up a ger~ine feeling of despair around lyrics like "You think there's a better Iace for you / Where everything will be brand new." Like the music, Mhe lyrics are never particularly diirect, but get their point across beautifully within the context of each song. "Sargasso Sea" is not an over- whelming album, but it is filled with strong tunes that gyet their point across with remarkable delicate- ness. Records like this should never be missed. - Andy Dolan Garbage Garbage Almo Sounds Hmmph. Leave it to ;producer Butch Vig (the drummer for this band) and "hip" label Geffen Records (Almo's dis- tributor) to chum out this kind of blah, boring altemaj unk. At least the band chose an apt name to signify tie kind of music that they make. Harsh? Well, maybe a little. "Vow"- the single that was pushed down everyone's throat this summer - is a pretty nifty little radio song, with a catchy chorus and an interesting blend of sonic textures, from distorted vocals to sweetly limpid guitars to pistoia-like drums. And the current single "Qaeer" also has a sinister sex appeal that redeems it some- what from the cheesinmsof the rest ofthe album. Singer Shirley Mansonhasamore- than-adequate voice mnd a kind of hard, decadent sensuality that hasn't been seen in pop music recently. But ... Vig's produmction on the album is shinier than anything he's done previ- ously, giving"Garbage" an icky, oil-slick sheen that occasionally works with the band's material but snore often sounds k.. Even his drum- ming sounds more like a drum machine than an actual human being. Mostly, however, the band just sounds angsty andjaded for no good reason. "Fix MeNow"'s lyrics proclaim,"Things don't have to be this way/catch me on a better day." Whatever. Like Alanis Morrisette, Garbage makes a cottage industry of be- ing angry and weird. And while their album isn't total junk, it's no prize either. - Heather Phares Moonshake The Sound Your Eyes Can Follow chock-full of just what the band advertises: Weird, kinetic sounds and noises that seem to bounce and jump within the confines of 10 com- positions - they're much too wild and willful to be called songs. While much of the album works on an experimental level, brimming over with pop tunes it isn't. Don't expect to hum numbers like "Joker John" and "The Grind." However, Polly Harvey of PJ Harvey appears on several tracks, most audibly on "Just a Working Girl." A unique album, "The Sound Your Eyes Can Fol- low" is full of ideas ... But can your ears follow it as well? -- Heather Phares Garbage in? Garbage out? You decide. Too Pure/American This niftily-named album is Want a SNEAK PEEK at the first exam?
