The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 12, 1995 -9 RECORDS Continued from page 5 Jodeci The Show, the Aerpaty, the Hotel MCA Records RWith their first two albums, "Forever My Lady" and "Diary of - Mad Band," came one of the hugest fan bases of any modern 90s R&B group. Jodeci's name was on the map. With a variety of group :and solo appearances, members Devante Swing, Dalvin, K-Ci and JoJo have kept the hype flowing in preparation for the third LP, "The 'Show, the Afterparty, the Hotel." Now that it's here, the hype has fallen flat on its face, exactly where it should be 'The first single off this CD, "Freek n You," is exactly the Jodeci we expect. Smooth, seductive lyrics, unique Jodeci harmony, freaky mu- sic - now that's Jodeci. The some- what short "Room 454" is an even better example of how Jodeci makes singing about sex almost better than " the act itself. Jodeci even sounded dgreat in "Bring on Da Funk" where the members sing to some funkier mix beats. But, as for the rest of "The Show ..." - crash and burn, 'crash and burn. "Fun 2 Nite" is such a dopey song, 1' don't know how these guys could even get out from under their covers knowing they did this. Although "Can We Flo" sported some of that good ol Jodeci harmonizing, the ,redundant drumbeat and often times "off-key lead singing slashed this song irreparably. But, what do you want to betrthat this song title will ybecome the new most-played line used by wan nabe macs at parties and bars? As for "S-More," please, no more. Anyone whose ever heard a Jodeci song would rightfully ex- :pect a stellar R&B CD. "The Show ;.." instead greeted us with a truck- I:ad of musical garbage and enough irrelevant, boredom-in- spiring interludes to make even ,'rLuth er Campbell proud. a= T - Eugene Bowen S kee-Lo flWush unshine/Scotti Bros. .;Have you tired of all these rappers ewom' with something "different"wh ich turns out to be the same as everything already out there?
