Who: Michelle Slater

Eligibility: Freshman Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Rochester Hills High School: Adams
Why: Slater finished first at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, Saturday.
Slater, who was running in her first meet, won the race with a time of 18:01. That
time was 16 seconds better than the second-place runner, Vanderbilt's Whitney
Spainnuth.
Background: Redshirted for 1994 cross-country...6th in Big Ten Indoor Mile
in 1995 track...9th in Big Ten Outdoor Mile in 1995...won 1994 Michigan 1600-
meter Class A State High School Championship... 1994 Midwest Meet of Cham-
pions 800-meter runner-up... Three time all-league, all-area, all-county for Adams
High School...enrolled in Division of Kinesiology...Majoring in movement
science.

Big Ten Player of the Week
Val Sterk, Michigan State
Junior Center Val Sterk played a key role in
leading Michigan State to the GOFF/MSU
Volleyball Classic title last weekend. The 6-
foot-2 middle hitter/blockeraveraged 3.3 kills,
3.1 digs and 1.5 blocks per game in four
matches en route to all-tournament honors.
Sterk, who played just the front row in her first

two seasons as a Spartan, contributed a career-
high 16 digs in Michigan State's win over
Illinois State. She also recorded 23 blocks for
the tournament.
