The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, September 11, 1995 7B CROSS COUNTRY Women place second at Miami Slater finishes with top time in first competition as a Wolverine EllsSnoed Diy sports writer The Michigan women's cross country team got off to a positive start this season with a second-place finish at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio Saturday. "I t's good for us to start (the sea- son) at Miami," senior Kelly Chard said. "Miami is a pretty good opening meet. Competition is fairly good but not too strong." The Wolverines finished with 68 paints, 17 behind the winner, Eastern IKentucky (51 points) and 21 ahead of third-place Ball State. "(The Miami meet) helps us get into race-shape," Chard added. In addition to the team's strong performance, three Wolverines posted top-10 finishes. In her first Big Ten and cross coun- try meet, sophomore Michelle Slater finished with the race-winning time of 18:01, 16 seconds ahead of Vanderbilt's Whitney Spainnuth. "I was really happy," Slater said. "UI was a really good start." Freshman Katie McGregor placed seventh for Michigan with a time of 18:25. Chard rounded out the top Wolverine finishes just behind her in eighth (18:30). "I'm not satisfied yet," Chard said. "Considering I'm working back from an injury, I guess it was fair. I cut a minute off my time from last'year." Injuries are something that have plagued other members of the team as well, including All-American Courtney Babcock, who will run in her first cross country event since the 1993 NCAA championships, next week. As more runners recover, the out- look for Michigan is good. "We need to work on depth," Chard said. "We've got a lot of strong indi- viduals but we need to work on group- ing up more and strength. "There are a variety of reasons: illness, injuries. It'll all come together with more training." In a season where the Wolverines are chasing their fourth consecutive Big Ten title, one might see pressure to do well as one of the team's biggest obstacles. However 'pressure' isn't the word the.team would use. "It really doesn't seem like there's much pressure," Chard said. "There's a lot of excitement. We want that to continue. "We've got a good, strong team and a lot of good athletes. We're really hopeful for a successful season." Slater echoed herteammate*sopinion. "We're hoping for Big Tens," she said. "Our goal is to win the NCAAs this year. Our coach says we have all the people to do it." The team will continue its season next Saturday at the Boston College Invitational. ~~~ANgr -ruE~tAyfI MICHiGAN o Senior Heather Grigg ran a 19:05 to place 28th in the Miami invitational Saturday in Oxford.
