28-The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, September 11, 1995 FIELD HOCKEY/SOCCE Michiga field hockey splits first ,twocontests at new outdoor field By Jd Rosenthal Daily Sports Writer Amid widespread excitement sur- rounding its new astroturf field, the Michigan field hockey team opened its home schedule this weekend by splitting 2-1 decisions with Delaware and Syracuse. In yesterday's contest against the Orangewomen, a controversial goal proved to be the deciding factor in a game mired in a defensive struggle. In a wild turn of events at 4:59 of the second half, Syracuse forward Jodi Carter deflected in her second goal of the game past Michigan goalie Rachel Geisthardt. On a free hit, it appeared that Syra- cuse did not let the ball roll one yard as it should according to the rules. From outside the circle a shot was fired by Orangewoman Heather Lowe, which was then tipped in by Carter. Michigan coach Patti Smith dis- puted the call with one official but lost her case. Ruled a goal, the Wol- verines then scrambled to compose themselves but just could not find the back of the cage. Michigan sophomore Julie Flachs defended on the play and felt that there was more than just the conten- tion of the ball rolling one yard on the play. "There were so many things wrong on the play that it should have been called back," Flach said. "One, the ball didn't move 16 yards. Two, there should have been a stick- hack on me because I hit her stick and three, the ball was in the air coming into the circle. There was no way that should have been a goal." Michigan had several scoring op- portunities but was unable to convert as Syracuse goalkeeper Cheri Herr stifled the Wolverine attack. Midway through the second half, Flachs was caught offside twice on penalty corner plays and slapped a wide-open shot right at Herr which was routinely stopped by the Syra- cuse goalie. "We had opportunities to score and we didn't score and that's the name of the game," Smith said. "We just didn't put the ball away when we should have. Had we capi- talized on our opportunities the score could have been 4-0 easy but we didn't score. We just didn't put the ball away in the corners and didn't get the job done." Michigan senior co-captain Aaleya Koreishi opened up the scoring at 28:38 off a rebound from Herr's pads. "There was no way that should have been a goal." - Michigan sophomore Julie Flachs on Syracuse's winning goal Michigan's defense sparkled as it held Syracuse to nine shots total, a paltry three in the second half alone. The Wolverines outshot the Orangewomen, 18-9. Friday, the squad unveiled its new field to the visiting Blue Hens of Delaware. In another defensive struggle, Michigan squeaked out a 2- 1 victory. Wolverine senior Sherene Smith and Flachs hit the back of the cage for scores, leaving the defense to mop up the rest of the game. Michigan held Delaware shotless until six minutes remained in the first half. Geisthardt notched six saves, los- ing her chance at a shutout when the Blue Hens scored on a rush in front of the goal with 1:26 remaining.
