The Michigan Daily - Friday, December 8, 1995 - 9B The Matchups By Michael Rosenberg Y y t v [a Travis Conlan is the likely starter, although Dugan Fife will see significant playing time. At the minimum, they must keep Michigan from turning the ball over too much. If they can knock down a few 3-point shots (and keep Duke from hitting too many of its own) that would just be a bonus for Michigan. Louis Bullock has been one of the top freshmen in the country, and may be too quick for any Blue Devil to defend. He's young, but doesn't play like it. He played his worst game of the year against LSU, and still managed to hit the winning shot. National TV and the Duke mystique aren't likely to faze him. With Willie Mitchell out with a knee injury, Jerod Ward is quaranteed to get plenty of minutes. In the last four games, he has shown signs of emerging as a solid all-around player. Albert White will be the backup; both he and Ward will be counted on to rebound and stop Price. Maurice Taylor will be the best player on the court, period. Duke's frontcourt is as weak as it has been in over a decade, so Taylor should dominate. A 20-point, 10-rebound afternoon should be the expectation; Taylor just has to be assertive and receive the ball in the post. Maceo Baston has six rebounds in his last two games. That's just not acceptable for a center. Baston needs to stay out of foul trouble and stay around the ball. The Wolverines probably can't win without a rebounding advantage, and Baston and improving freshman Robert Traylor will have to provide it. First and foremost, the Wolverines have to get over their Duke complex; they must-believe they can beat the Blue Devils. If they can do that, Michigan should win this game. The Wolverines are simply deeper anq more talented than Duke. So will they finally end their six-game losing streak against the Blue Devils? The guess here is yes. Like the Wolverines, the Blue Devils have two players sharing the quarterbacking duties. Chris Collins and Steve Wojciechowski are not spectacular, but Wojciechowski is a smart passer and Collins is a better scorer than Fife or Conlan. Duke gets the edge here, but it's not overwhelming. Jeff Capel is an atypical Duke player - spectacular one minute, awful the next. He is shooting .359 from 3-point range, but only .373 overall. Bullock's constant defensive pressure and offensive quickness may get to him. He loses out here because of inconsistency, but is still capable of a big scoring streak. Ricky Price may be the next great Duke player. But he isn't there yet, and it may be a while before he is. Price gives up three inches to Ward, who has been playing excellent defense as of late. This is an intriguing matchup. Price and Ward were both top high school players who have shown flashes of outstanding play. Saying this is Duke's weak point is like saying a bad temper was Ghengis Khan's weak point; it's obvious. Unless Tony Moore or Taymon Domzalski suddenly figures out a way to stop Taylor, they will be in for a long day. They may wish they were back in Durham taking final exams. Greg Newton had been a disappointment until this season. No more. He is shooting 65 percent from the field, is rebounding well, and is the main reason (other than his coach) for Duke's resurgence. Baston may be the best defender he has faced. Duke has two major factors in its favor: recent dominance of Michigan and the genius of coach Mike Kryzyzewski. But a look at the talent levels reveals Michigan to be superior. The Blue Devils probably don't have enough scoring options to stay with Michigan down the stretch. NOPPORN KICHANANTHA/Daily The Michigan hockey team renews its rivlary with Lake Superior State tonight at Yost Ice Arena at 7:30. lCers start breawith Lae Supenor By John Leroi Daily Sports Writer There's good news and bad news for the Michigan hockey team as the semester winds down. Bad news: the Wolverines (8-2 CCHA, 11-3 overall) have only had a full lineup available for two games this season. Injuries and suspensions have left coach Red Berenson to work with an often-depleted roster. Only in a Friday game against Mi- ami (Ohio), who owns the CCHA's worst record, and a Saturday matchup with Alaska-Fairbanks, has Michigan been at full strength. Unfortunately for Berenson, that trend will continue at 7:30 tonight when Michigan entertains Lake Su- perior State at Yost Ice Arena. Fresh- man Dale Rominski will serve a one- game suspension for playing the part of Peter McNeely in an bout with Bowling Green defenseman Kelly Perault last Saturday. However, there is some good news as well. Right wing Bill Muckalt is back at full strength after missing the matchup with the Falcons with a foot injury. Center Mike Legg is also 100 percent after suffering a separated shoulder against Michigan State. "This year we've had some real injury problems and trouble with sus- pensions," said center Brendan Morrison, who missed the Wolver- ines' first five games with a knee injury. "It hurts in practice when lines are switched up, but our flow and our chemistry has been a lot better." And there's more good news. Bar- ring any freak injuries or another brawl, Michigan will have a full lineup when it travels to Western Michigan tomorrow. The two teams have already faced each other twice this season, with the Broncos taking a 7-2 decision at Yost and Michigan coming back to win, 3- 2, the next night in Kalamazoo. "We've seen them before and we know what they can do," Berenson said of Western Michigan, who sits atop the conference with a 10-2 record. "The two teams we play this week- Players to watch: Michigan: C Kevin Hilton (6 goals, 17 assists, 23 points), C Brendan Morrison (6-9-15), LW Jason Botterill (10-8-18) Lake Superior: RW Sean Tallaire (15- 7-22), D Keith Aldridge (6-11-17), C Brian Felsner (6-11-17) end are tough," Berenson said. "The key to winning the conference is hav- ing a winning record against these teams." The Wolverines can expect to see some serious firepower from Western Michigan and Lake Superior. The Broncos rank second in the CCHA in scoring and goals against and the Lak- ers sit one spot behind them. Michigan center Kevin Hilton finds himself second in the CCHA in scor- ing race, sandwiched between two players he'll battle this weekend. Western Michigan's Jeremy Brown leads the league in points with. -11 goals and 15 assists through 16 games., Bronco forward Justin Cardwell is ir a three-way tie for third with 12 goals and ten assists. Western has outscored it opponents 49-25 in league play and goalie Marr Magliarditi leads the CCHA in wins with 10. Lake Superior forward Sean Tallaire is tops in the CCHA in goals and is tied with Cardell for third in the conference in scoring. Junior Brian Felsner, the cousin of former Michigan star Denny Felsner, has come on strong lately, scoring six goals and nine assists in 10 CCHA games. However, the Lakers will have.tq play without starting goaltender Joht Grahame, the only league goalie who sports a goals-against average undo 2.00 (1.67). Grahame is out with a knee injury and isn't expected .to pla tonight. "We know what we're up against Berenson said. "There are no secret on these teams, no gimmicks. We havO to play well to beat them." Playing good hockey won't be any See HOCKEY, page 12 114ic 19 One of the country's top 20 record stores...right in downtown Ann Arbor!
