By Melissa Rose Bernardo Daily Theater Editor Since today is the last day of the Daily in 1995, and your source for theater information will be a distant memory until the dog days of Janu- ary, here's a little list to keep pinned to your mittens. So next week when you're sitting around with nothing to do, or performing an unbelievable act of procrastination, think theater. And hey, it can be a cheap holiday gift. Here's the roundup for Ann Arbor and the Detroit area. Ann Arbor TONIGHT! Yes, tonight! Get thee to the Friars concert. Wacky, happy, a cappella fun from your favorite sub- group of the Men's Glee Club. They sing, they make jokes, they dance (well, sort of), but most of all, they entertain. Their Annual Study Break concert is at 8 p.m. at the Power Cen- ter. Tickets are a mere $6 at the Union (763-TKTS). For that price, you can afford to bring a date - or two. This weekend: More wacky fun, but this time it's Victorian - cour- tesy of the University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society. They present "The Grand Duke" tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m., plus Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mendelssohn Theater. At the paltry sum of $5, you can afford to see it twice. Next weekend: "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," or - for all you non- French speakers -"Dangerous Liai- sons." Under the direction of BFA Performance student Camilo Fontecilla, the Medea Theater Troupe has put together a fine cast for this Christopher Hampton play. Just $6 for students at the Trueblood Theater; the Union's got the tickets for next Thursday through Sunday at 8 p.m. And get on your toes for "The Nut- cracker." The Ann Arbor Ballet The- ater, along with the Michigan Sinfionetta presents the classic holi- day dance set to Tchaikovsky's mu- sic. You won't want to miss Musical Theater student Job Christensen in the lead role of the Cavalier. That's Friday Dec. 15 and Saturday Dec. 16 at 8 p.m., plus Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. It'll run you $15, but it's well worth it. Detroit Go, go, go Joseph! That's right, folks - Donny Osmond is here as Joseph in the Andrew Lloyd-Webber/ Tim Rice musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." And all I can say is - it's amazing how 15 minutes of music can be stretched to an hour. Donny is pretty neat, though, especially considering he spends the bulk of the show pranc- ing around in not much more than a diaper. Tickets run $20-$60 for per- are merry ntertaining December formances Tuesdays through Sung, days, and it's there through January. Call (313) 832-2232. "Shear Madness" doesn't even be- ginto describethe romp you'll have if. you go to the Gem Theater for thil audience participation-murder mys- tery. You write the ending in this madcap whodunit set in a hair salon- And you'll never see the same show' twice. "Madness" happens Wednes- days through Sundays; tickets range from $16-$24, a bargain for the fui you'll have in the cozy Gem. Call, (313) 963-9800. If you've got rhythm, you'll love, STOMP at the Fisher Theater. Back for a limited engagement through Dec. 17 (following last year's smash sell- out), the British percussion group will entrance.you with their explosive, in- fectious synchronized sound. You can get into the beat Tuesdays through, Sundays, for $22.50-$30. Call (313) 872-1000. And a new local music release that you'll definitely want to check out: "Falsettoland" has been recorded by. the cast from the recent Basement Arts production. The William Finn- James Lapine musical was in superior vocal form in the production, and promises to make a great transfer to CD.
