12A - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, December 7, 1995 The AP All-Americans: M' puts two on 2nd team, one on third From staff and wire reports The Michigan football team placed three players on the Associated Press All-American team yesterday, led by Jason Horn's selection to the second team. Horn, a senior lineman, led Michigan with 11 sacks during the regular season. Tailback Tshimanga Biakabutuka, who rushed for a Michigan season- record 1,724 yards, and offensive line- man Jon Runyan were selected to the third team. Tommie Frazier, who led top-ranked Nebraska to its thirdstraightundefeated regular season, was selected to the first team along with rushing champion Troy Davis of Iowa State and scoring leader Eddie George of Ohio State. Frazier directed an option attack that averagedanation-leading 52 pointsper game. Theversatilequarterbackpassed for 17 touchdowns and ran for 14scores for the defending national champions. Davis is only the fifthrunnerin NCAA history to gain morethan 2,000 yards in a season. He finished with 2,010 yards, including an Iowa State-record 302 against UNLV. George led Division I-A with 24 touchdowns and was fifth in rushing with 152 yards per game. Ohio State and Nebraska each placed three players on the AP team. Along with George, the Buckeyes had wide receiver Terry Glenn and of- fensive lineman Orlando Pace. Frazier was joined by Nebraska center Aaron Graham and defensive lineman Jared Tomich. Glenn caught 57 passes for a school- record 1,316 yards and 17 touchdowns. The other wide receiver is Southern Cal's Keyshawn Johnson, who set a Pac-10 mark with 90 receptions and an NCAA record with 12 straight 100- yard receiving games. Tight end Marco Battagliaof Rutgers led everyone at his position in recep- tions (69), receiving yards (894) and touchdowns (10). The all-purpose player is Leeland McElroy of Texas A&M, who rushed for 1,122 yards, caught 25 passes for 379 yards, returned nine kicks for 208 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. Joining Pace and Graham on the of- fensive line are Jonathan Ogden of UCLA, Jason Odom of Florida and Heath Irwin of Colorado. Rounding out the offense is placekicker Michael Reeder of Texas Christian. Reederwas 23-of-25 on field goal attempts and made all 20 of his extra-point tries. The defense is led by Arizona line- man Tony Bruschi, the only repeater from lastyear'steam. Bruschi had 14 l/ 2 sacks to tie the NCAA career record of 52 set by Alabama's Derrick Tho- mas. Also on the defensiveline are Tomich, Cornell Brown of Virginia Tech and Marcus Jones of North Carolina. Tomich was one of the leaders of Nebraska's swarming defense, which held opponents to 78 rushing yards and 13.6 points per game. He had 10 sacks and 24 quarterback pressures. Brown had 103 tackles, including 14 sacks and 11 other stops behind the line, for the nation's top-rated run de- fense. Despite constant double-team- ing, Jones had 17 tackles for losses and six sacks in his last eight games. The linebackers are Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern, Kevin Hardy of Illinois, Ray Lewis of Miami and Zach Thomas of Texas Tech. Fitzgerald anchored a defense that gave up the fewest points in the nation. His 130 tackles were second in the Big Ten even though he missed Northwestern's final game with a bro- ken leg. Hardy, the latest in a long line of great Illinois linebackers, had 11 sacks, intercepted three passes and forced five fumbles. Lewis led the Big East with 160 tackles and had two interceptions, whileThomasmade 131 tackles, caused six fumbles and re- covered four. The secondary features Greg Myers of Colorado State, Chris Canty of Kan- sas State and Lawyer Milloy of Wash- ington. In addition to his standout play at defensive back, Myers set a school record by returning three punts for touchdowns and broke the Western Athletic Conference mark for career punt return yardage. Canty tied for the NCAA lead with eight interceptions, including two for touchdowns. Milloy led Washington with 115 tackles and forced three fumbles. Punter Brad Maynard of Ball State led the nation with a46.5-yard average.
