50 years in jazz for an underappreciated talent

Well, Inject me with disease and call me a cow, Anthrax is coming to town! Tonight, at Harpos for an all ages show. With
their new album "Stomp 442" on the shelves, their pumped up to rock the world. After the excision of original vocalist Joey
Belladonna, Anthrax has progressed to more mainstream appeal with new vocalist John Bush's more appealing screaming.
"Stomp 442" combines the most interesting elements of Anthrax's speed sludge music and certain more mainstream rock
elements. The middle road was always a slightly dangerous place for metalitians, being too harsh for outsiders and too
normal for the metal scenesters. But it's a much safer place, now. The jump from Kylle Minogue to Anthrax was a lot further
than from Bush to Anthrax.
fioitunately, the band hasn't mellowed. The blistering strains of "Random Acts of Senseless Violence" are great and pretty
indicative of the whole disc. The driving drums on "Perpetual Motion" and its periodic chant-like vocals create a fine
pumping sound which is emblematic of some of the best hard music to be found. Topped off with the soothing "Bare," the
album is as satisfying a piece of detritus from our '80s metal heritage as is likely to be found in our area.
The doors for the live version of these happy metal campers open at 7:30. Life of Agony opens. You can call Harpos at 824-
1700. And If you don't call, you'll kick yourself. Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next week, but soon, and for the rest of
your life. Go and see what the face of America's landscape could be.
