Texas Invitational gives 'M' taste of Nationals By Doug Stevens Daily Sports Writer The Olympic trials are still 97 days away. However, this past weekend the Michigan men's swimming and diving team headed south to Austin, Texas, for the purpose of competing against Olympic-level opposition in a long-course pool. At the Texas Invitational, the Wol- verines faced off against such nation- ally-ranked competition as the Long- horns and Southern Cal. Many world- class swimmers not currently attached to a university team competed in the meet. Included in this category was Michigan's Tom Dolan, who is red- shirting the fall termand representing his club team. In addition to the top-flight compe- tition, the fact that the meet was swam in a 50-meter pool created more of an Olympic-type atmosphere. The long- course pool is what is used in the trials, as opposed to the 25-meter pool which is the norm in collegiate com- petition. Despite the impressive competition and the Olympic-sized pool, Michigan's emphasis in this meet was not necessarily on winning. Rather, coach Jon Urbanchek's squad used the competition more as a barometer as to how far it has progressed thus far and what needs to be worked on in the next hundred days. "This was our last long-course meet," Michigan swimmer John Piersma said. "It was a good opportu- nity to swim long-course before Olym- pic trials and to see where we are at this point in the season." Given the brutal practice schedule that the Wolverines have maintained in the early going this season, Urbanchek was not expecting peak performances by his defending na- tional champion swimmers. Rather, the coach simply treated the meet as an extension of practice in a more competitive environment. "The meet went really well for us," Urbanchek said. "It was good compe- tition. USC and Texas are kind of ahead of us in terms of preparation but, all in all, it was a good experi- ence, Everyone swam an honest ef- fort." Although the emphasis of this meet was not on winning or attaining record-breaking times, the Wolver- ines did put up some strong perfor- mances. Tom Malchow and Andy Potts both were event winners. Malchow swam a 2:02.52 in taking the 200-meter butterfly and Andy Potts won the 1500-meter freestyle in 15:48.10. "I think Malchow and Potts were the two pleasant surprises at this com- petition," Urbanchek said. In addition to that duo, Dolan, who is particularly focused on earning a spot on the Olympic team, won the 400 IM in a time of 4:28.17. While the Olympic-type atmo- sphere was the prime factor in the team's decision to go to this meet, it wasn't the only reason. In addition to the trials, the Wol- verines are also concentrating on de- fending their national title; the NCAA Championships will be held in Austin in March. "It was a good opportunity to swim at Texas and see what it is like," said Piersma, who competed in the 100, 200, and 400-meter freestyle races. "It gave the freshmen a chance to see what it is like and gives us more con- fidence going into NCAAs." .asrcv...,:e. : tic;e .-r.
