By Danielle Rumore Daily Sports Writer BOWLING GREEN - Detroit Red Wings' executiveJimmy Devellano was present at the BGSU Ice Arena to watch Michigan trounce Bowling Green, 8-1, Saturday night. Yet,he wasn't as interested in the game as he was in watching Michigan's Kevin Hilton. Hilton was a third-round choice oftheWings'andthe 74th pick overall in the 1993 NHL Draft. The senior center ocke'y has steadily im- proved over his three Notebook seasons at Michigan. Priorto Michiganhe played for Compuware of the NorthAmericanJun- ior Hockey League. He was the 1992 NAJHL and team lead- ing scorer with 35 goals and 42 assists over 39 games. He collected 31 points his freshman year and 23 in his sophomore campaign. He exploded last season, collecting 31 assists and dumping in 20 goals for 51 points. His point total was third-best on the squad last season and second for centers behind junior Brendan Morrison. "I think he has averaged over a point a game (over his career) which makes him a good player at this level," Devellano said. "He is having a great year." This season, Hilton leads Michigan with 23 pointson six goals and 17 assists. His assist total is the highest on the team. Now that Hilton is a senior and has establishedhimselfasaleader, Devellano and the rest of the Wings' personnel are taking a closer look at him. "We need to assess him," Devellano said. "We're going to watch him alot to see what we are going to do. We're a pretty strong team in the middle with Yzerman and Federov. That's a pretty tough lineup to crack. RIGHT ON TARGET: Michigan's power play clicked on all cylinders in the win over the Falcons. Michigan converted four of its eight man-ad- vantages. All ofthe conversions came in the first period. John Madden scored the first power- play goal to put the Wolverines up 1-0. WarrenLuhningfollowedMaddenwith thenextconversion, whichmadethescore 3-0. Michigan converted the last two man- advantages after Bowling Green's Chad Ackerman served a five-minute major for checking from behind at14:53. Matt Herr and Steven Halko dumped in the twogoalsrespectively, 1:57 apart giving. Michigan a 5-0 cushion going into the second stanza. A SHOULDER, A FOOT ... AND A LEGG: This season, the Wolverines have faced a wide array of injuries and Saturday's game was no exception. Michigan right wing Mike Leggplayed in Saturday's contest with a separated shoulderandscoredagoal intheprocess. "I thought Legg had one of his better games. We can't have him playing hrt all of the time, but if that is goingto elp him play better, then maybe he needs -to get hurt before games," Michigan coach Red Berenson joked. Bil Muckalt did not play beouse of a foot injury hesuffered prior to the Mihi- gan State game last Tuesday. Hrr THE sHOwERs: Freshman Date Rominski and Bowling Green's Kelly Perrault got into a struggling matchat 19:33 of the third period which quickly turned into a fight. The referees let them struggle for a few moments until the fiirst punches were thrown and the gldves aid pads went flying. "I didn't see howlfinally broke intoa fight. I think thatth were slashing each other and (that's ptobably what started it)," Berenson said. Rominski and Perrault were each:as- sessed five-minute major penalties for fighting and handed a one-game suspen- sion. Rominski will miss Friday's action against Lake Superior State at Yost ice Arena. FALCONSFALTER: BowlingGreen sast victory over the Wolverines was a:4-3 squeker Feb. 8, 1992. Since thenthe Falcons are 0-11-1 against Michigan: The Wolverines were riding a two- game losing streak before the victory Saturday night. Michigan had not est two in a row since the week of Feb:25- 26 1994 when it dropped two at Mia i. The freshman poked in a rebound from a John Amold shot at the goal mouth. The score prompted a big chunk of the BowlingGreenArena-recordcrowd of 5,021 to depart. The only blemish in the game for the Wolverines occurred with only 27 sec- onds left in the game when freshman Dale Rominski and Falcon defenseman Kelly Perrault got into a scuffle which erupted into a fight. They were disqualified from the game and suspended from their teams' next contests.
