8- The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, November 28, 1995 'M'icers must face Spartans shorthanded Pe By Danielle Rumore Daily Sports Writer Coming off the College Hockey Showcase in Milwaukee, the Michigan hockey team will have to deal with a little more than a weekend split and the loss ofleft wing Jason Botterill tonight. The No. 4 Wolverines (7-1-0 CCHA,10-2-Ooverall)mustcopewith the almost certain loss of right wing Bill Muckalt, who is suffering from a foot injury. "Unless there's a miraculous re- covery, which I don't expect, (he won't skate). We didn't know any- thing about it until today," Michigan coach Red Berenson said yesterday at practice. "He tried to skate but he couldn't push off on it. "This is not good, with Botterill and Muckalt out." The Wolverines lost Botterill last Friday during their 7-3 victory over Wisconsin. Botterill was ejected from the contest after being called for fight- ing and received a two-game disquali- fication. He served the first part ofthe disqualification during Michigan's 3- 2 loss to Minnesota in the Showcase Saturday. This is the second time this season that Botterill has been called for fight- ing and has received game disqualifi- cations as a result of the penalty. He will miss tonight's action against in- state rival Michigan State (7-2-0, 10- 4-0) at Munn Ice Arena at 7 p.m. "These (upcoming) games are huge games and we can't afford to lose players," Berenson said. Muckalt injured his foot off the ice The Titans are led by 6-9 junior Leon Derricks, who left Michigan after the 1993-94 season. STREAK ENDS: Fisher's decision to start freshman Louis Bullock against Arizona ended senior Dugan Fife's streak of 65 consecutive starts. Fife was inserted into the starting lineup against Georgia Tech Friday. Sophomore Maurice Taylor is the only Wolverines that has started in all five contests. Bullock and fellow freshman Albert White have started three times this year. n7-tvD ---. er" P - %1- on Ron Oliver got his first basket as a Wolverine last night. Oliver turned down scholarship offers from South Alabama and Miami (Fla.) after aver- aging 18 points per game during his senior season at Little Rock High School in Arkansas. Ryan DeKuiper scored his third point of the year on a foul shot. His first bucket came in the final minutes against Weber State. TV TIME: Tomorrow'sagame against Ball State will be televised at 7:30 p.m. by Prime Network. Sunday and tried to skate in practice yesterday. He had too much diffi- culty, though, so he headed to the lockerroom during practice. "It looks like he just has a forefoot sprain, so it's not his ankle," athletic trainer Rick Bancroft said. "It was a freak thing. He twisted his foot. I would say his status is questionable (for tonight)." The Spartans are also coming off a weekend split at the Showcase. They lost to Minnesota Friday, 6-5, and beat Wisconsin, 5-4, Saturday. "They looked good this weekend and they played well," Berenson said. "They had four power-play goals. The power play looks really good." Michigan State returns 16 letterwinners from last season's squad. The Spartans are led by senior center Anson Carter. He was Michi- gan State's leading goal-scorer a year ago with 34 and has tallied nine goals this season. "They really look like a much bet- ter team than last year," Berenson said. "Their forwards are much-im- proved. Their defense also looks bet- ter, maybe because of the forwards." WOLVERINES Continued from Page 7 The Dec. 28 game will cap a season that was successful in many respects, as far as Carr is concrned, but also one that may ultimately be a disap- pointment. For the third straight year Michi- gan aimed for first place in the Big Ten, and for the third straight year the Wolverines missed, this time by three games. "Our goal was to win the Big Ten, and if we didn't, we wouldn't have any excuses," Carr said. "And we don't have any excuses. "It is a season that we're proud of, but it's not a season that we're satis- fled with." Instead, Northwestern will face Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl, and that's something that doesn't sit so well with Carr. Michigan obviouslyhadagreatdeal to do with the Wildcats' Rose Bowl bid, as the Wolverines' win over Ohio State sent Northwestern to Pasadena. When asked about his thoughts on the Northwestern-Southern Cal matchup, Carr paused, with a grimace on his face and no words flowing from his mouth. Carr then took a drink of water and paused again, the water not able to dissolve the distaste of having some- one other than Michigan in the Rose Bowl. He spoke briefly about North- western-Southern Cal, saying, "there's a lot of ways to look at it," but that was basically it. He must not have had anything nice to say. NOBODY DOES IT BETTER?: There are several Wolverines on the All-Big Ten teams, but one seems to be miss- ing from the first team. Michigan tailback Tshimanga Biakabutuka made the league's sec- ond team, as Ohio State's Eddie George and Northwestern's Darnell Autry were named the first team tailbacks. The selections were made by the conference coaches. Irons, a linebacker, center Rod Payne and linemen Jon Runyan and Jason Horn made the first team, as did defensive backs Charles Woodson and Clarence Thompson. Woodson also was named Freshman of the Year. George and Northwestern line- backer Pat Fitzgerald were named offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively. PLAYERS OF THE wEEK: Biakabutuka and Woodson were named Big Ten players of the week for their perfor- mances against Ohio State Saturday. Woodson interceptedtwo of Bobby Hoying's passes, including one that ended the Buckeyes' final drive. Biakabutuka rushed for a career-high 313 yards, the second-best single- game effort in Michigan football his- tory. Bedau~e aI-nighters areent alway0 0pent inx the Iibrary.
