24- The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 8, 1995 Cleveland clinches tie for title CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP)- The Cleveland Indians, symbols of base- ball futility for four decades, clinched at least a tie for the AL Central title Thursday night, beating the Seattle Mariners, 4-1. The Indians need one more win, or one more Kansas City loss, to guaran- tee their first postseason appearance since they were swept by the New York Giants in the 1954 World Se- ries. Their 85 wins are their most in any season since 1968, when they won 86. Charles Nagy wonhisthird straight start, and Carlos Baerga homered for the Indians, winners of 11 straight home games and 13 of their last 15 overall. Seattle dropped six games behind California in the AL West and one gane behind Kansas City in the wild- card race. ,Nagy (13-5) gave up one run and five hits in seven innings, including Jay Buhner's career-high 28th home run. Rangers 2, White Sox 0 ARLINGTON, Texas - Roger Pavlik threw a three-hitter for his first career shutout as the Texas Rangers halted the Chicago White Sox' eight- game winning streak with a 2-0 vic- tory Thursday night. Pavlik (8-9) had lost three of his previous four decisions, but he was in command against a hot-hitting White Sox lineup that was batting .342 with a .558 slugging percentage over the eight-game streak, Chicago's longest since 1991. The complete game was Pavlik's first of the season and fourth of his career. Pavlik pitched out of a ninth-in- ning jam by making Robin Ventura ground out to short with runners on first and second. , Texas ended a four-game losing steak and moved within two games of idle Kansas City in the AL wild- card race. I 4 - Lions' Brown signs new deal. One-year contract worth $2.7 million PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - Lomas Brown was back in a Detroit uniform Thursday after signing a one-year deal with the Lions. Although he will be activated for Sunday's second game, against Minnesota, it was uncertain how much playing time he might see. The Lions said their starting left tackle had agreed to a one-year con- tract for $2.7 million, minus the pay for missing the season-opener against Pittsburgh. "He's going to make us a better team," running back Barry Sanders said after the signing. "I think most people thought it (the holdout) would come to a halt the first couple weeks of the season." The Lions have insisted since last winter they can afford to pay Brown only $2.5 million on a one- year contract under salary cap limi- tations. Brown has been holding out for a $6 million, two-year deal or $3.5 million for one year. He skipped training camp. Brown, in his 11th year outbf Florida, made the Pro Bowl the past five seasons and has started 149 games for Detroit. He was the Lions' sixth selec- tion in the 1985 NFL draft. Fred McGriff broke up Rapp's no- hitter in the seventh with a towering home run to centerfield, his 24th. In the opener the Braves took 21 min- utes to beat the Marlins 6-3 in a completion of a suspended game de- layed four months, two days, and 54 minutes. Rapp, (10-7) allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks to win his fifth straight comple- tion. Sheffield's home run, his 10th, and the fourth in the five games since he's been back from a hand injury, came after Chuck Carr reached first on an infield single after a headfirst slide. In the sixth inning, Conine hit his 22nd homer off struggling Steve Avery, (6-12) with Carr and Sheffield aboard. Carr's single was the first hit offAvery since the first inning. Avery, who gave up six hits and seven strikeouts and no walks in seven in- nings, lost his third straight. The Braves' lefthander has given up 20 home runs this year. In the first game the winning pitcher was in the minor leagues and a ninth- inning hero was in St. Louis as the Braves quickly completed the win. Luis Polonia who was with the New York Yankees when the first game started May 4, singled in the tie- breaking run in the top of the ninth. Vyacheslav Fetisov to a one-year contract, the team announced Thursday. Fetisov, 37, was acquired last April 3 from New Jersey for a third-round pick in the 1995 Entry Draft. He played in 14 of Detroit's final 15 regular season games, posting a plus- 3 mark with three goals and 11 assists, including a career-high six-garme scoring streak April 13-23. "We really liked what he brought to our team down the stretch last season," said Red Wings Senior Vice Presidet Jinm Devellano. drf. "He's also a quality person who brings leadership and character to tour team." With Fetisov's signing, the Red Wings have retained the core six defenseman who finished last season - Paul Coffey, Vladimir Konstantinov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Mike Ramsey and Bob Rouse. Fetisov had become a free agent after the 1993-1994 season, his fifth with New Jersey, but opted to return to the Devils and signed as a free agent last Feb. 23. From Staff Reports Michigan sophomore forward Matt Herr has been named to the 1996 United States National Junior Team, which will play in the 1996 World Junior Hockey Champion- ship. The tournament will be played Dec.26, 1995, through Jan. 4, 1996, at six venues in Massachusetts. Herr, who is 19, produced 11 goals and eight assists in 37 games during his first season with the Wolverines. The 6-foot-1,188-pound forward was picked by the Washington Capi- tals in the fourth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, going 93rd over- all. He is originally from New. Windsor, New York. Herr is one of nine players named to the team already; the rest of te 22-man roster will be filled by Dec. 1.
