Industrial By Doug Stevens Daily Sports Writer In four months, many members of the Michigan men's swimming and diving team will venture to Indianapolis to battle the nation's best at the Olympic Trials. In the meantime, the Wolverines are concentrating on practicing hard and fac- ing top competition to ensure that they will be in peak condition come March 6. Given these facts, it is easy to under- stand why the defending NCAA Champi- ons would choose to race against the U.S. National Team, a squad comprised of swimmers ranked in the top 16 in the world in their respective events. While the U.S. National Team beat Michigan convincingly, 64-44, the meet gave the Wolverines experience. "We got spanked as far as our team goes, but sometimes that's good," head coach Jon Urbanchek said. "We got beaten by a very good team. We just needed some hard-nosed competition and we got it." Former Wolverines Gustavo Borges, Carlton Bruner and Eric Wunderlich were among the top-flight competitors that Michigan faced Friday. Borges, the cap- tain oflast year's NCAA Champion team, won the silver medal at the 1992 Olym- pics in the 100 meter freestyle. Bruner and Wunderlich are United States Swim- ming National Champions in the 1500- meter free and the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke, respectively. In addition to those three alumni, cur- rent Wolverine Tom Dolan swam for the U.S. National Team. Dolan, who is red- shirting this semester, is the current world record holder in the 400-meter IM and won three events at the NCAAs this past spring. "This term, I am basically just training for the Olympic Trials," Dolan said. "I want to get in good training without hav- ing to focus on school work." The No. 1Wolverines entered the meet after convincing wins over top 10 foes California and Minnesota, and anticipated facing heralded competition. Although members of the national team won most of the individual races, the Wolverines held their own and seemed to be pushed by their opponents. "This meet (gave) Michigan a chance to swim against the best," assistant coach Alex Braunfeld said. "These are the people they will compete against for the Olym- pics." S in Olympi In the 1500-meter freestyle, Bruner1 pushed freshman Andy Potts through the entire race and Potts finished just behind Bruner with an impressive time of 15:59. Another race in which a Michigan + competitor swam particularly well was in the 400-meter freestyle. Michigan's John Piersma, the No. I swimmer in the world in this event, was pushed by Bruner, in addition to teammates Chris Rumley and Potts. Piersma, who swam a 4:03.70, nipped a quickly finishing Bruner by .07 seconds. "It was a good swim by Piersma," Urbanchek said. "(The 400 free) was a very tight race." . Friday night Wolverine fans were introduced to freshman Tom Mal chow. Malchow, who has qualified for the c tuneup national team, swam in his first Michi- gan meet Friday after missing the team's first two competitions due to pneumo- nia. Malchow finished sixth in a-very tough 200-meter freestyle field, but came back and won the 200-meter but- terfly with a time of 2:06.32. "I was excitedjust to swim forMichi- gan, finally. It was a good experience," Malchow said. "Anytime you swim against the national team, you are going to swim your best." Considering that the Wolverines swam well and given a good taste of the level of competition that they will face at the Olympic Trials, the meet was beneficial to Michigan. "The meet brought out the best in both teams," Urbanchek said. "Above all, it was a fun meet." m
