The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, November 13, 1995 - 7S MIAMI Continued from page 1B ~4or-l5 (.266) for the series with the -il- quite an improvement on their 20.5 percent success rate coming tInto the weekend. "(Morrison) makes a big difference when he quarterbacks the power play," said Berenson of his center, who posted 'three points on the man-advantage in his ~first game of the season Friday. "Our passing was better and we were much ,more organized." ,If only they were that organized throughout Friday's game. On the power play, Muckalt punched ia rebouind 15:11 into the first period to ;give hit T~his sixth goal of the season and ,Mlici ga an early lead, but it wouldn't be so r the Wolverines from then on. Just 3,4 into the second, the Redskins came back with a power-play goal of their :Own when Randy Robitaille put the puck between Marty Turco's pads. The Wolverines answered with the extra man again less than a minute later on Botterill's fifth of the season at 4:15. But Miami scored two more power- play goals before the period was over. Captain Kevyn Adams' one-timerat 13:25 beat Turco short side and Vitali Andreev's quick shot at 16:53 left Turco with no chance to make the save. 1n the final period, the Redskins added to the damage. After Michigan held Miami shotless during a five-minute major assessed to Botterill for hitting from behind at 17:04 of the second, the Wolverines blew a defensive assign- ment and Marc Tropper gave the Redskins a 4-2 lead at 2:36 of the third. "We weren't playing well at that point," Berenson said. "We needed to get the momentum back somehow." The Wolverines did seven minutes into the period on a pretty passing play. With a defenseman draped over his back, Morrison one-handed the puck to Chris Frescoln at the point, whose perfect feed let Greg Crozier bag his sixth of the season. Michigan closed the lead to one. About three minutes later, Blake Sloan tied the game by breaking loose in the slot and blowing a snap shot by a helpless Trevor Prior at 10:02. The winning goal came in fitting fash- ion -on the power play. Morrison's slap shot from the point came off Prior's right pad straight to Botterill, who calmly slid it in to give the Wolverines a 5-4 lead they wouldn't relinquish. "We're happy to win because we were behind," Berenson said. "We played well in spots, but ... we knew we could play much better." Botterill pointed out after the game that skating strong in the first period would be key for Michigan down the road. Berenson echoed these sentiments to his team, hop- ing to see results the next night. He did. The Wolverines carried the play from start to finish Saturday. Only 4:10 into the game, BotterillI used Hilton as a decoy on a two-on-one and put a wrist shot over Kevin Deschanibeault's shoulder to score what would turn out to be the game-winner -his second in two days. John Madden increased Michigan's lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later with his third of the year, one-timing Bubba Berenzweig's pass by Deschambeault at 7:07. The Redskins went flat the rest of the way. Miami coach Mark Mazzoleni attrib- uted his team's collapse to a lack of intensity. "Michigan might not have had the re- spect for us (Friday) and that might have been reversed (Saturday)," he said. "They are a good team and, even though we lost (the first game), our players might have thought, 'Hey, they're not that good,' and then didn't come ready to play." As the game wore on Saturday, Mat Herr scored his first and second goals of the year, John Arnold recorded his first and Warren Luhning, whose flashy be- hind-the-back pass set up Arnold, got his third. lc igan 3 Miami 0 3 1-4 First Period - 1, UM, Muckalt 6 (Hilton.Momson),15:11 (pp}.
