Notre Dame at Air Force Tie Breaker - Michigan at Penn State, total points NAME: PHONE: .a ,a ,z s l e to MlinnesotaWisconsin'' ,t Offense takes a sta as s pikers drop pair By Andy Knudsen Daily Sports Writer The Michigan women's volleyball team's hopes of a first-ever berth to the NCAA tournament were severely bad- gered this weekend. The Wolverines (8-8 Big Ten, 14-12 overall) lost in straight games Friday night at Wisconsin (5-9, 13-13), 15-9, 15-12, 15-4, and at Minnesota (5-11, 11-15) Saturday, 15-3, 15-2, 15-13, as they had trouble putting points on the board. "Both Wisconsin and Minnesota played unbelievably well," coach Greg Giovanazzi said. Michigan knocked off both teams in Cliff Keen Arena over the weekend of Oct. 13-14, but hitting problems pre- vented it from winning a game this weekend, let alone closing out a season sweep of either team. The weekend started poorly for the Wolverines as they had 30 hitting errors and only 29 kills for a minus .007 hitting percentage against the Badgers. Senior Shannon Brownlee led the team in both categories with 11 kills and nine hitting errors. No one else on the team had more than four kills. "Both teams served us real tough and we had trouble passing," Giovanazzi said. "(Sophomore setter) Linnea (Mendoza) didn't have many choices in setting the ball." Badgers Lauren Burny and Marisa Mackey kept many of the Wolverines' spikes from finding the floor, with 19 and 18 digs respectively. Heather Dodaro powered Wisconsin with 13 kills and Laura Abbinante had all 41 of the Badgers' assists. Michigan's hitting fared better against the Gophers as it ended with a .193 hitting percentage, but it could only manage five points in the first two games. But Giovanazzi said the team wasn't hampered as much by point scoring problems as it was by side-out prob- lems. "We didn't play long enough to score points," he said. "We were under 50 percent (on side-outs) in both matches." Brownlee again led the Wolverines with 18 kills and junior Colleen Miniuk added 10. Minnesota posted an impressive .350 hitting percentage led by Heather Dodaro's 22 kills behind a .513 per- centage. "They were unconscious, they hit at will," Giovanazzi said. "I'm not sure the team expected Minnesota to be as good as they were." Michigan's blocking game also lacked in comparison to its opposition, totaling four team blocks in each match versus 13 for Wisconsin and 12 for Minnesota. ' Giovanazzi did see one positive point over the weekend though. "I've been really impressed with Linnea," he said. "She kept her head when she was getting poor passing." Mendoza had 20 assists against.the Badgers and 41 against the Gophers. The Wolverines will need a bost of confidence if they hope to getan invitation to the NCAA tournamept. "The morale has been low since.-he Indiana match (last weekend)," Giovanazzi said. "Realistically forius to get to the NCAA tournament*We need to get one upset this weekend." This weekend, the Wolverines face No. 9 Ohio State Friday and NO, 7 Penn State Saturday at Cliff Keen in important conference matchups.
