Netters turn tables """" .. i with stror by Adam Miller Daily Sports Writer Pound. Pound. Pound. Sound familiar? Such is the sound of a collegiate tennis match. Blistering serves. Solid ground strokes. Bullet overheads. Pound. Pound. Pound. The Michigan women's tennis team (6-3 in the Big Ten, 11-5 over- all) knows a lot about pounding. The Wolverines, who achieved their goal of finishing above .500 in the conference, closed out the regular season on a four-match Big Ten win- ning streak. They pounded Ohio State (1-8,11-12), Michigan State (5-4, 16-6), Iowa (3-6,8-9) and Minnesota (2-7, 4-16). Having won seven of their last eight matches, the Wolverines hope to do the same April 26-28 at the 10th Annual Big Ten Championships, held at the tournament's original site in Madison. As predicted before the season, Michigan will be the No. 4 seed. However, the remainder of the seed- ings are not as predicted. Michiganshad expected to face Illinois (5-4, 14-8) in the first round, since the Illini held down the No.5 spot for most of the season. Instead, the Wolverines will face off Saturday against Michigan State, ECONO-CAR " Choose from small economical cars to fine luxury cars " Special weekend rates * Pick-up services upon request * We accept cash deposits Rent a car from ECONO-CAR 438 W. Huron, Ann Arbor 761-8845 ig finish the unexpected No. 5 seed. T"J Spartans, preseason picks for No. 9, earned the No. 5 spot with upsets o, Purdue, Illinois and Ohio State. Michigan dumped the Spartans, 6-3, April 17 in Ann Arbor. All' three Spartan victories came in close matches, while the Wolverines cruised to six easy wins. Michigan junior co-captain Freddy Adam should get another shot at State's sizzling No. 5 singles player, Alicia Leone, who prevailed in a tight three-set match in their only previ= ous encounter. Michigan's Amy Malik will also have an opportunity to avenge her loss to Molly Poffenberger, Down, 5-1, to Poffenberger in a third-set tiebreaker, Malik fought back to tie it at five, only to have Poffenberger take the next two points and the match. The tournament's biggest sur- prise is its first seed. The host Badgers claimed the top spot by de- feating four-time defending cham- pion Indiana (8-1, 22-7). Indiana is No. 2 and will face the winner olt Friday's preliminary match between, No. 7 Iowa and No. 10 Purdue (0-0, 5-14). Unlike many post-season affairs, there is no elimination at the Bi Ten tennis tournament. Instead, a teams play each day in a rotating bracket that produces five winners, at Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 on the final day. So what does Michigan expect at the tournament? "We may be seeded No. 4, but we're aiming for No. 1," senior co captain Stacy Berg said. This can mean only one thing. Berg and the Wolverines know ten- nis, and they're saying ...
