Golfers falter in windy Illinois by Andy De Korte Daily Sports Writer Strong winds out of the North bothered the Michigan women's golf team's quest for a victory in the Illini Spring Classic. The winds that are typical for the Illinois Orange course, coupled with rain, stripped the Wolverines of another opportunity to reach its spring goal of a 320 tournament average. If the Wolverines had shot a 960, they would have prevailed by nine shots over first-place Illinois, who carded a 969. However, the Wol- verines could shoot no better than a 327 over the weekend, and finished fourth (336-327-333=996) in the Illini Spring Classic. Northern Illinois (972) and Illinois State (989) also beat the Wolverines. The weather proved to be a real friend to Illinois because of the ex- perience it has in the wind. Darcy Chandler, who played the Orange course four years earlier, was the only Wolverine who had experience at Illinois. Not having seen the course made Friday's practice round more important than normal. It was only fitting that the rain delayed the start of that round. Commenting on the rain, Michigan coach Sue LeClair said, "The rain suits have gotten a real workout this year." Donning the Gore-Tex rain suits for all 36 holes on Saturday, the golfers did not retire them Sunday for warmth. Although the rain ceased, the golfers wore four layers of clothing: a turtleneck, a vest, a shirt, and a sweater, to combat the 25+ miles per hour wind and the 40- degree weather. "It was very cold and hard to not get stiff," LeClair said, "but I still expected them to shoot 80s. They weren't real satisfied with their performance and that is good to know. "Once again, our short game re- ally bothered us. But the time of the year had a large bearing on the per- formance of the team," LeClair said. A 79 by Becky Hayes and an 80 by Erica Zonder were the .best Wolverine rounds of the tourna- ment. The pair, who won Wolverine medalist honors in seven of their eight tournaments this year, took different paths to their Wolverine- best 247s. Hayes carded a disappointing 86 in the first round before settling down to her final round 79. LeClair and Hayes had similar views on the importance of her improvement. "I pleased with my performance on Sunday. I fixed something in my stroke and I started to putt a lot better," Hayes said. "It is really important that everything came to- gether, and I fully expect to break 80 all three rounds in the Big Tens." Erica Zonder sandwiched her 80 between an 82 and an 85. "I played pretty good, but I really didn't hit good or putt good in the last round," Zonder said. Kristin Beilstein, the other Wolverine to earn medalist honors this season, was the most consistent Wolverine, shooting 83-82-83=248.
