The Michigan Daily -Thursday, January 17, 1991 - Page 7. Danielle Dax styles, Dax cranks out some pretty Blast the Human Flower good tunes. As mentioned, "Tomorrow Never Knows" is the Sire Usually, you know you're in trouble when the best song on your new record is a cover tune (just ask Quiet Riot). Such is the situa- tion that Danielle Dax finds herself in with her sophomore half slump, Blast the Human Flower, and her cover of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." Dax does come up with some good songs on half the record. The other half? Well... In large part, Dax continues in the same direction as on her debut Dark Adapted Eye: basic I-IV-V chord rock and roll dressed up with interesting synth effects, some Arabic influences and of course Dax's incredible voice. Dax goes a bit further this time around, incor- porating acid house influences on a couple of songs. While sticking to these two best song here, somehow trans- forming the Beatles' near-classic into a house tune. It's a great idea, and she tops it off by mixing in samples of the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" at the end of the song. Pretty cool. Dax's rockin' side is exercised on songs such as "Big Blue '82," (which I actually heard being played right before a commercial during a football game on New Year's Day), and "The Id Parade." While this latter song sounds a bit too similar to "Cat House" from Dax's first record, it still rocks. Dax runs into trouble when she slows things down and tries to write some dramatic stuff, such as The Living and Their Stillborn." While most of this stuff is pretty good (at least lyrically), it's like watching Full Metal Jacket-while it was a good film, it wasn't en- joyable. Unfortunately, three of the songs here fall into this category. Although Dax's unique voice al- Dax continues in the same direction as on her debut. most saves some of these tunes, their blah-ness prevails in the end. While Blast the Human Flower is not nearly as strong as Dax's first record, it has more than a few bright spots. The boring songs do weigh it down, however. One won- ders if it would have been better released as a six-song EP rather than a full length record; that way it would be all good, rather than just 60 percent. And it would be cheaper, too. -Mike Molitor CLASSIFIEDS NNOUNCEMENTS £rATDTTVAaT dIQ1 W vfo1-.. £mho.. Call Luke 662-6597 Cop Continued from page 5 Reitman's credit that the film comes off as harmless as it does; he never forgets to come back to the lurking threat of the psychotic Crisp to inevitably justify Kimble's hulking presence. Kindergarten Cop is consistently amusing and buoyant in a way that most of Reitman's films (Twins, Legal Eagles) are. The distinguishable difference lies in Michael Chapman's photography. For some reason, Reitman convinced the cin- ematographer of Raging Bull and Taxi Driver to shoot his film, and the result is slick and eminently crafted. The supporting cast, espe- cially fresh-faced Penelope Ann Miller as Kimble's romantic interest and Pamela Reed as the his partner, is extremely likable. Only Richard Tyson as the pony- tailed villain and Caroll Baker as his devious mother resonate as slightly off-key. There's something comic and over-done about the duo that never quite justifies Kimble's vigilance. KINDERGARTEN COP is being shown at Briarwood and Showcase. Zoo Continued from page 5 her play, she forged the friendships that she based The Zoo Zoo Chronicles around. She has been a member of the Common Ground Theater Company, first as a performer, then as the artistic director for the past twenty years. Since the '70s, Common Ground has been a center for feminist political theater, once having a cast composed solely of women. They have produced pop- ular plays such as Children of a Lesser God, as well as radical musical numbers ranging from African tribal rhythms to Motown. The production of The Zoo Zoo Chronicles is a collaboration of the efforts between Common Ground and Performance Network. And given the events in the Middle East, it is being performed at the most appropriate of times. THE ZOO ZOO CHRONICLES will be playing tonight through Saturday and Jan.24,25 and 26 at 8p.m. and Jan. 20 and 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Performance Network.
