I didn't really think my view of a criminal was fair
because it was full of stereotypes and mixed
messages I have seen on tv.
Unfortunately, it was all I had to go on.
I was pleasantly surprised to see my picture was
wrong when we went to Maxey. I was surprised the
boys looked like any other boys. I know that sounds
awful, but I had a skewed image and I didn't know
what to expect. My image was also off because of
my Criminology class; since statistically more
blacks are in correctional facilities, I expected that
to be true at Maxey.
My parents didn't help my image either. It's sad to
admit, but my parents are prejudiced and have
contributed to my image of a typical criminal.
It is so easy to put preconceived ideas and images
on paper. It's so easy to rely on these preconceived
pictures and not look to new ones. It is also a
source of comfort to rely on something you know.

Spring may not be in the air,
but the colors of the season
have arrived. At this week's
art sale, you can find Cloud
Forest Imports' offering of
colorful, handwoven clothing
and accessories from Guate-
mala. Mexican Baja jackets, a
Cloud Forest specialty, will
also be displayed.
The sale, which begins today

know I am homeless. My clothes are dirty and ragged. I'm
hungry. I ask you for change but you turn away because
you're angry and embarrassed. I am angr ynd embar-

The Tra ied Vlunteer Corps' (TVC) Homeless Project
places volunteers wi local emergency shelters and
housing advocacy agencies. Students lead support groups
and shelter house meetings, assist with housing searches,
provide a listening ear, and much more.
Think about all you have to offer. When preregistration
for Fall Term begins, stop by Room 2205 of the Michigan
Union for information and an override for Sociology 389,
the TVC course.

and enthusiasm for community service here on campus, will
focus on recognizing current volunteers and volunteer or-
ganizations, promoting secce, and facilitating involvement
in community service activ'ies.

Soviet Poster Art on Display in the
Art Lounge
Stop by the Art Lounge (First Floor of the Michigan Un-
Ion) to see Soviet poster art which illustrate the freedom
of expression due to glasnost.
The posters' themes range from announcing theater per-
formances and festivals to commenting on alcoholism,
disarmament, and religion.
The exhibit will be displayed through April 12 in the Art
Lounge. The Art Lou'nge is open
during the Union's regular building hours.
